GREYTOWN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The funeral of the late Mrs Pierce Cotter took place last Saturday at the Greytown Cemetery at which many relatives and friends were present. The event reminds one of the frequent saying "another old settler has gone from amongst us" and one that well deserves the record of being known during life as a faithful wife, a good mother, and ever kind to all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance Yesterday morning the Rev Mr Whyte (Presbyterian) held Divine service at the Forester's Hall, (Greytown) to an intelligent, and influential congregation The Rev. gentleman is able as an elocutionist and an extempore speaker, his Illustrations were very apt and his applications of the theme of the discourse were strong and convincing, with a total absence of "rant," leaving an impression upon one's mind, at the conclusion of the services, of edification. After the benediction, a brief meeting was held to elect a Committee of gentlemen, who, in conjunction with Gladstone and Carterton Committees, will act with a view to found and maintain a much needed want, a Presbyterian Church, in a district which hitherto has been in a state of intellectually religious starvation.

News of the recent finds at Mahakipawa is causing country settlers in this district to declare that "if the news continues good, they mean to try their luck at the diggings,".
