London, September 15. It is reported that Mr W. H. Smith, leader of the Houbo of Commons, is to bo raised to tho peerage, and that ho will be succeeded as lender by Mr G, J. Gosohen, Clmti-' cellor of the Excbaquer. It is stated that tho rumour respooling the Chinese invasion.of Australia is a hoax, and that there is no chance of collusion between China and Bussia. The first stop in the action Farnell v The Times has been taken at Edinburgh. : The Bank of Australia has declared a dividend of 12 per cent, and carried £13,000 to the reserve fund. ; News has been received hern that Major Bartelott, who was in charge of one portion of tho Stanley expedition, has. been murdered by Arab Harriers, Jamieson, who *vas with' the party, will succeed him in command.
