Not "One of Them."
TO.THE EDITOR. Sir,—As the last "little nigger" permit me to reply to your article referring to the candidates under the heading of" Somebody's Shadow," in which lam styled a" Renallite," It is not surprising that you should full into this error, and as I was nominated by Mr A. W. Email and A. W. Hogg, the inferenco is perhaps a natural one, but it is one, I am sure, which those who know me best will reject, I stand aS :: a candidate for the Borough Council unpledged to Mr Eenall or anyono else. lam interested in the prosperity of Masterton, and if elected I will do my best to promote tin! welfare of the Borough, and to proteot the interests of the ratepayers. Any measure which may come before the Council, which, in my judgment, will tend to improve the Borough and benefit the majority of tho ratepayers will have my support, but I will oppose all unnecessary reckless, or illegal expenditure of the rates, lam of opinion that the gas scheme may by judicious management bo brought to a successful issue, If gas can be supplied at a price that will ensure an extensive consumption, it will assuredly become a success. There are no doubt certain conditions which are indispensable to the success ot any undertaking, and if these are wanting, the result must be a decided and disastrous failure. When the gas question was first mooted I contended that drainage and a good water supply should have precedence, It was urged on the other hand that the former would be reproductive, whereas the latter would bo unproductive works, This contained ds much truth us made it plausible, and I aduiitttcd the force of the argument. The sanitary condition of Ma'sterton, moreover,, was then, and is now, very far from satisfactory, and I hold the opinion that a portion of the rates would be well and profitably gpent in improving the sanitary condition of the Borough.
