Melbourne, Sept. 12. Arrived—Hauroto. Vernon,- one of the quartermasters on board, was rested on a charge of attempting to drown the harbourmaster at the Bluff on the morning of the steamer's departure'. An increase of the import duty on :oata and barley from two to three shillingsper cental has boon agreed to, but the proposal to increase the stock tax was negatived by a majority of one.
Brisbane, Sept. 12, The financial statement shows a deficit of £IBO,OOO for the last year. During the last three years the deficit has amounted in all to Lb'oo,ooo, and tip total debt is now L 27,300,000. The Treasurer does not look with a favorable eye on a land and income tax, hut proposes to entirely,,repeal the old tariff and remodel it on a Protection basis. Ad valorem duties will be increased from %to 15 per cent. In order to foster tho farming industry, duties on dairy and garden produco will be increased. It is hoped that a surplus of L 72.000 will be shown next year.
