A curious accident is described in the Lyttelton Times as having happened at Ballantyne and Oo.'s drapery establishment at Timaru on Thursday afternoon, A man ,vho was engaged in clearing up the place turned to walk out, and his mind intent on something elso, instead of going into the shop to reach the door ho walked through a largo plato glass window. The glass was Bomewhat thiu for the size of the sheet; nevertheless it probably was defective in some way, or it should havo stopped him. Imperfect annealing may account for it. The man carried the lower half before him into tho street, the upper half sliding down in the groves of the frame behind him. He waR quite unhurt, but it is needless to say was surprised at the results of his pro-opcupation, It is with deep regret that we record the death of Mr J. 0. Vallance at .Kaumiiigi last evening, Although for some time past Mr Vallance has been in dolicate health, and within the last few weeks, staying on the Upper Plain for the convenience of receiving regular medical attendance, it was not expected that his illness would assume a fatal form. The late Mr Vallance was ono of the most popular men in the district. As far as his health permitted he took a keen interest in stock-breeding, and his stud has a Colonial reputation, like bis late father, Mr .0. A. Vallance he bore an unbloimshed personal character, possessing the respoct and affection of all classes of the community. His • kindly but unassuming presence will he missed .whett the Wairarapa settlers meet together for many a long day; W learn from' Dr Hosking, who is the family, medical attendant, that the deceased had been suffering from a cardiac affection, and that tho immediate cause of death was a failure of the heart's action, The late Mr Vallance was, wo hear, in his year. Arrangements liavo been mado for the funeral to leave Brentwood on Friday afternoon.

When all other attempts have failed to extirpate rabbits in tho Australian colonies (says a London paper), the desired object might possibly be effected by means of lobsters. A useful hint in this direction will be- found in the Annual Register of 1876. "One of the first acts," it is stated, "of the new l J rince do Contl, lince his accossion to his father's profession in the Islo of Adam, has been to give orders that tho game thereon should be mostly killed (on account of tho damage done by it to tho corn in that district, of which the inhabitants had for a long time complained) and given to the poor. Somo time before this, when the general extirpation of rabbits in France happened to bo on tho carpet, it was found that tho smell of jobsters or crawfish "would entirely destroy them in their burrows. 1 ' Lobsters also, it seems, have another valuablo property, namely that of boing destructive to weevils in wheat, It is mentioned that M. do Baosses, first President of the Parliament at Dijon, finding that the weovils had got among some wheat at one of his farms, aiid having tried in vain almost every method to get rid of them, adopted a plan that had been practised with success in tho province of Pointon. Ho had somo livo lobsters, which lie threw on tho wheatthatwas infested, and in fourhours' time the weevils came out from all parts of it (iiid dispersed themselves all over tho walls in sifoh numbers that in many places tlioy were black' with these voracious insects. f'Wow JNbvbb Think,—lf the Crabbed old bacholor who uttered tjlh sentiment pould but witness tiio income 'Uioqgljt, (jeep study and thorough investigation ot women in determining tho best medicines to keep their families well,' and would note their sagacity and wisdom in selecting Dr Soule's American Hop Bitters t as' the beet, anddomonatrating.it by Seeping their faitiiljes in perpetual health, at a. njero. nominal expense, he would be forced to acknowledge that si)ch oontimonts are baseless and false. Michael Davitt, speaking at Knockaroo, said the alliance of the HomeEulers with the Liberals had not assisted Ireland. The Irish had been handcuffed-not shielded. A correspondent" Solon" writes to us to contrast the way in which Brown & Rodgers worked their business in Masterton for the past two years, competing in his opinion, unfairly against men like " Williams & Barker," who "pay their way." Our correspondentnmy be right, but Brown & Rodgers are" down" now, and we do not care to hit at tliein. If Australia-may be called the land of rapid fortune-making, then New Zealand apy be termed tho country , of gigantio possibilities. For in this free and happy land, remarks the Manawatu Times, there are in existance three Acts, by the aid ot which every man who can get a wife should be able to secure a competence and lay up treasures hero below. One is the Married Women's Froporty Act, by which no woman can be sued for debt, unless sho is the possessor of a separate estate of the value of 11,000 at least: the other is the Land Act, which onables a man to get a deterred payment section and then run into debt to an unlimited extent to improve it, while absolutely protecting it from the Bankruptcy Act, which furnishes the means for utilising the two other Acts for the benefit of anybody but tho trading community. And yet some say our laws are not liberal enough, •

Ratepayers in tho business centre of Masterton may feel interested in tho following paragraph wliioh appeared in a recent Issue of tho Napier Telegraph: —" I'he streets of the town this slimmer ought to be better watered than over they have been before,' Additional Btandpipes are to be erected, and they will be so placed that by the timo the watercart's load is emptied, another standpipo will bo reached, Formerly tho water used was got from the high pres. sure supply which made it pretty expensive. Now, owing to tho success of the large artesian wells, the low pressure will be available for tho purpose, and as that'costs nothing, tho Council are likely to be very liberal in supplying it to tho streets, In only ouo of the stand pipes will the high pressure bo required. Ono councillor last night expressed the opinion that it was a groat waste of good water to usq it on tlip streets at all, when the salt water was available, but if fresh water is obtainable at no cost, it is difficult to see how that state of things could be improved."

Wo extract the following from T. Kennedy MoDonald and Co's Property Guide —The sale which took place tho other day at an auction mart of a large estate in the county of Mayo; showed the rain-, oils decrease in value of landed property which is now going forward-in some parts of Ireland. Messrs Dowsett and and Co. submitted, to competition, by diroction of, the trustees of the late Earl of Caval, the Tanetan Valley Estate, in the island Achill, comprising 2,068 acres of freehold land, including tho whole island, with house, entrance lodge, and scattered hamlet of fifty three cottages. In answer to questions the auctioneer admitted that only 243 aores out of the entire 2068 acres were let; and that tho tenants wero three years in arroars with their rents. The bidding commenced with an offer of £6OO, and =£63o having been reached the' auctioneer declared it sold. The purchaso money represented about 6s an acre,' being, perhaps, the very lowest price at which land was ever sold in any part of the United Kingdom, or any other country in Europe."

Mr Meadows, representative, of H. London met a largo meeting of settlers -in Mr F. H. Wood's 'auction rooms,' Greytown, on Monday. Mr Buchauan presided, and introduced the gentleman. Mr Meadows explained.to the meeting his object in visiting New Zealand. His firm and others'were anxious to opon up a large trade with New Zealand in' preference to America, and he believed from what he had seen of the country that it was capable of exporting produce to an extent that would largely benefit tho country. It would, however, take some yto of perseverance to do this. They would have to compete with America and Canada from which countries largo quantities of butter, cheese, and other produco were oxported, Mr Meadows gave a description of the class of cheese suitable for the English market where theft was unlimited demand at a fan' price. He recommended cheeses of 601bs weight, a good deep colour as most suitable for Home trade, and spoke highly of tho Dalefield cheese which he conßidors coidd not bo beaten in the district. He told his hearers that if the Dalefield factory coidd place its cheese in the English market at 80s perewt they could sell as inuoh as they could produco. He passed some severe strictures on the Greytown faotory, He gave some useful information as regards the export of butter whioh he strongly recommonded should ho sont in kegs of sixty to seventy pounds weight, Several of the farmers present obtained usefdl information in answer to questions put to MrMeadows.A vote of thanks ( was accorded Mr Meadows at tho conclusion of tho meeting.. Amongst the American exhibits at the Maritime Exhibition at tho Alexandra Palace will be a lifeboat of an entirely new principle, the invention of Captain Norton, of the United States Navy, Tho boat ballasts itself automatically in from seven to ten seconds after being launched; it also evacuates its own ballast, A 26 feet beat, which has lately been on trial, had a freeboard of2ft 2 inches when ompty, and of 15 inches with forty-eight men on board. The trial of its stability proved so satisfactory that a bill is before the United States Congress which, if passed, will make its . introduction into the United States service and merchant vessels compulsory. English boathuilders should look to their laurels.—Court Journal.
