Masterton Volunteer Fire Brigade.
The annual general meeting of the members of the above Brigade was held at the station on Wednesday evening, Captain Muir presiding The following report and balance
sheet was. read and adopted ; "The year which has just passed, being the. tenth which the Brigade has been in existence, has been one of general activity, both as regards the number of calls the members have been subjected to arid' also in matters of finance connected with the Brigade. Of the former there have been fifty-two roll calls during the year, as follows :■. Twenty-nine meetings, average attendance fourteen; ten fires, average attendance eighteen; chimney fires; eight, average attendance, twelve]; false alarms, five, average attendance, fourteen. During the past year there has hot been any large fires, 'no more than one.dwelling being destroyed : in each case, owing, ho doubt to the 1 prompt, manner in which the members liaye turned out when called upon,.esppC;
iallyhitlie case of the,EpyalHotel, wbeii their, services were/ appreciated by .tlie- various insmiibej companies who forwarded a \ donation, of.' £lO towards tbe / Brigacle'e funds. The public .during the : r past' term ; have supported tlie Brigade liberally, nearly £lO being collected by subscriptions, which;' together with; proceeds from the late ball, leaves'a good balance for: next year's transactions. .One great drawback to the members at fires is the want of a hose reel, ahd
no doubt this will be one of the first appliances to be procured during tbe next term A'few of the members are provided .with uniforms, and before many months is passed it is to be hoped that the whole of the members will be provided with them. Gaps, belts and spanners have been procured during the past year,, and the Brigade totally cleared of debt. One pleasing ceremony took place, during the last term, Engine keeper Laugley being presented- by Captain Muir, on behalf of the Brigade, with a timepiece, in recognition of his services as engine keeper for tho past three years. In conclusion, tho Brigade is to be congratulated oh the position to which it has attained, its officers and members are well kept up to thoir duy, and attend regular at practice, ■
