United District Charitable Aid Board.

, .• By Our Special Beportor. .A special meeting of the above Board was hold at Wellington yesterday afternoon, there being present, Messrs G.' M. Kebble' (Chairman), Speedy, Allen, Heaton, Bunny, A. Young and Dank ;■ . ~ ;.The Chairman briefly /explained; the object of the meeting, and stated that considerable correspondence had been received from the.Masterton Benevolent Society, insisting -upon the payment of supposed, arrears. He would like to inform those present tlfat Mastertpri was.the;'only' had not paid' the. monies duo to the' Board last year. ', Mr Bunny, said lie had been at a meeting held in Masterton a few days ago when he understood some action' was to be taken in the matter.

The Chairman further remarked that the Wellington' City Council™ the only body in the district which had paid up to date. Some motion should ho taken on the subject, and they should ascertain why defaulting bodies did not pay up. Mr Young: Have replies been received from the defaulting bodies referred to on tho subject. '• The Chairman: These bodies havo been twice 'communicated with on tho subject, but tho only reply received was from the Hutt Council, informing the Board that they did not intend to pay, Mr Allan! What power have wo, undor the Act, to compel the payment of arrears ?

The ..Chairman stated the only course open would bo to sue for the amounts through the Supreme Court. ■ MrHeaton, asked if Mr Bunny, as a member of the Wairarapa institution, could not throw some light on tho subject. Mr Bunny said he did not wish to hold back, anything which ho knew about the matter. A meeting of delegates from the vorious contributing bodies had boen held in Masterton last week, and tho unanimous feeling of that meeting was that no steps should be taken which would permit tho United Board to obtain monies from the Country Districts. The Wairarapa people had expected that something would be done in the House during the past session which would give them some satisfaction, but nothing whatever having transpired, they considered it was their duty to refuse to pay. The feeling in his district was very strong on the subject They might bo oompelled by the 'existing laws to contribute, but otherwise they would take no action. He felt the only way. that the- country districts would .receive | justice would be to have tho present iniquitous la"w repealed, They had found, upou inquiry, that the sum of £IBOO per year had been expended by runholders for the relief of "sunelopersl'; alone. Re submitted that if any such persons had visited Wellington people and sought the solace of a night's shakedown they would bo immediately transmitted to the-police station. It was unjust that country people should be com-, pelled to support' the poor of the'eity, and the Wairarapa Boards flould offer a determined resistance to such an act, Mr Allen said he had been of opinion for some time past, as Mr Bunny bad stated, tho town, districts reijpoijsible for. tlieir own debts;. They were forced, however, by the law, to demand a certain per centage from each district. If Mr Bunny could show them any way out of the.lemma, lip would gladly support him in the matter, .As the iawsjopd he woujd move.that the necessary steps, tq recayey.frbnf the local bodies tho amount due. by each body '.•; I
