The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 1888. Colonial Universities. .
On Saturday last"a Wairarapa sheepfarmer presented diplomas to tho Wellington graduates of . the New Zealand University. This particular slieepfarmer, however, happens to be vice-chancellor of the University, and is a 'practical illustration of the fact that pastoral pursuits may be combined with high literary and ■ scholastic attainments,, There is in'many minds a 'vague prejudice '.against colonial universities, even among those who are fully alive to the great work which has been accomplished by their old world predecessors during six great centuries, of-history. .The [reflection, does not come home to some at once that, the civilising and beneficent influences of higher education, which have done so much for England, will in time operate in a similar way in a colony like New Zealand. -Even now in this colony good work is being • accomplished by our university establishments. .Their ■ range: embraces science, law; and medicine, as well as arts| and their privileges are accessible to the poor and humble as well as to the wealthy and proud.'; Wee ,have.
