TEMPERANCE OPEN MEETING.

The third open ineetiug of tho season' in connection with the local Good Templars Lodge was hold in tho-Tem-porance Hall -last night, A - shilling tea, which would have been good value at double tho money, was the first event, something liko one hundred persons sat down to do justice to the edibles provided and they did it. After the room had been cleared ; - the,. Hall was thrown open to the public aud was quickly filled. ■ The. platform was occupied by merabe'rs.of the order in regalia, tlie W.C.T., Bro. Evernden presiding. The Chairman briefly addressed the audience mid exprossed the pleasure it gave him in seeing the support accorded the movement inaugurated by the Good Templars of Masterton in holding open meetings. After some further remarks, the first event on the programme was called, The overture was an operatic selection, piano and violin, the former being played by Miss Corbett, and tho latter by Miss Alice Corbett and Mr Winchester. This was followed by a recitation by Master Willie Evernden entitled " How he saved St Michaels." A duet" Music, and hor sister Song" by Miss Grace Ro\\;se, and Mr T. Rowse was rendered in a masterly manner and deservedly received an encore. Miss Emily Perry played the accompaniment. The next event was a recitation by Miss Powell, "An honest publican's advertisement." The elocutionary power displayed by this little girl of some ten or twelve summers was wonderful, and scoured tho plaudits of the audience. A song entitled"Apart' 1 by Miss Harrison waswell rendered. Miss M, Williams presiding at tho piano. A short but animated .address by Mr J. Bambor was given, during which he introduced one or two pointed anecdotes. A pianoforte duet," 11 Corricolo," by Misses Emily and Rose Perry was deservedly oncored. A' diminutive httlo temperance girl, whoso natno we did not learu, gavo with ability a recitation entitled " Winter," and was followed by MrT, Rowso with a song "The harbor lights." Tho Rev. TV. Rouso addressed the' ineetiug on tetnperanco, and his remark's beiug interspersed with many humorous anecdotes went down well, and.he took advantage of the good humour of the meeting, to give somo good sound advice on tho drink question and recommended his hearors to get out of their straight laced ideas and ,inanfully work for the redemption 'of those who wero in soro need of help and friendly sympathy, Mr F. Harrison sang " Tho Sexton," aud received a fair measure of approbation. A reading from Mr W. T, Grundy from Charles Dickens' Christmas Carols, "AMcrryXrnas," was fully appreciated, as was also a song by Mr Gaut ontitled " Tho Rominy lass." In response to an encore the latter sang " Happy Moments." Addresses were given by Mr Collier anil " Captain" Condon of tho local corps of the Salvation Array, The concluding item, an astronomical lecture by MrR. Temple in character,'caused a deal of laughter and fun, especially to the more juvenile portion of the audience. His get up was immense as a colored profeißor, The Chairman in his concluding remarks invited inombers to join them, and assist in the work. These open meetings had been the means of doing some good, and he [hoped their hands would be strengthened.'
