CORRESPONDENCE.

PUBLIC SCHOOL MORALITY.

(To the Editor). - Sir.—l have read the correspondence regarding the charges made by the New Zealand Times and Mail against our public schools in the Eveniug Press, and lain pleased to see the charges so completely answered, and the morality of our schools so ably vindicated! The statements of "grieved parents" may be true, or they may be false, but admitting thorn to be true, it would be clearly absurd to use this as an argument against the state school system of this colony. If we look to the seminaries of education in Christian England and Presby-: : teriau Scotland do we find them models moral of purity? "Grieved parents" should see to it that .'they come into' Court with clean hands. Have they' conscientiously discharged the duties .; devolving .upon them as parents? The neglect,: apathy,-and indifference of parents is one of the great obstacles, in the .way of moral training teachers have to contend with,' The foundation' of character is laid at home : at the fireside, and, until parents recognise their responsibilities' in this, respect, any effort to attain a high standard of | morality will be a vam and;idle v task. If a certain section of the public had the slightest idea how ridiculous they made themselves, they would pause before they, assailed that which is. .the glory of New : Zealand—her splendid system of education, . v " ;.;.." ■..'■ '■■ lam&c '.".'■;.
