Considerable discussion took place when the next item, Inspec-tor-General's Clerk, and' Assistant Native ' School Inspector, 1275, was brought on. A strong feeling was expressed in favor of bringing the Nativo Schools undor the control of the Education Boards, and a motion was carried reducing the item by f1 as an indication of opinion in favor of handing the Native Schools over to the Board. . .;. Public -Schools, £315,025.—Mr Orroond moved to reduce the vote by £20,000 with a view of leaving £6OOO in the hands of the Government to keep certain.' country schools open, which would otherwise be closed, if, as he proposed l>y this; motion, the school age was increased to'six years, and £26,0000 a year was tlius saved.. - The Premier said" tha Government did not intend reducing the education vote this year, but it would bo considered in recess. Mr Ormond only wished to test the question, and would reduce the amonn't in his motion to £IO,OOO. The Minister said about ,65,000 children would be kept from School if the age was reduced. During the debate Mr Seddon severely attacked the Minister of Education, and said lie was the Jonah of the present Government. After considerable discussion the vote wag carried.
