THE BLENHEIM MYSTERY.
(From Our Own Correspondent) Blenueim, Monday afternoon. Smith, alias Long, was brought np ■before-'Resident Magistrate Sogers, prosecuted on behalf of the Insurance Association, and charged with burning a four-roomed house on tho 19th inst. The evidence of the neighbor's ■son was to the effect that- the morning after the fire. Long gave him a note to take to Smale, draper, from whom he had bought some goods. The note was subsequently handed to the police, which requested Smale not to identify the goods if the police should make a fuss. T. Smale gave evidence and corroborated this. Sergt. Scanlan deposed finding accused and to his making mauy contradictory statements about himself; also to his positive statement that everything'was burned, when ho afterwards found nearly everything had been removed and planted. Tho accusod appearod selfpossessed and rather vacant during the examination. Ho observed when theoSergt, gave evidence " all I have said is correct." The Court was crammed, and there is great excitement. He was remanded for 8 days.
