• _ Capetown, July 18. _The accident in the De Beer mine, Kimberley; was caused by ignition in the shaftproventiug the men working in the mine from getting out, and many were suffocated by the smoke. Forty three white men and 500 natives, wore rescued.. The damage is estimated at £20,000. A quantity of dynamite was exploded hi the mine in order to dear the galleries from damp. The fire in the De Beermine is still burning, and all hopes of any others being rescued has been abandoned. It is believed that fatalities by fire at the De Beer mine will amount to 224, of which 24 are white men.
