The Mayor,thought that in the face of'tho. petition tho permit might bo held over to give tho opposing.petitioners a chance to withdraw their objection. Or Chamberlain said the petitioners had only objected in consequence of their supposing a general slaughtering license was applied for. , . ■■ • -
Tho Mayor irioved and Cr Cullen seconded by way of amendment that tho application' be referred back to tho Committee for their report, . . The amendment was carried,
CHAMTABM AID. ' The Seorotary of tho North Wairarapa Benevolent Society, wrote stating they were still out of funds. CrT, Chamberlain said ho was relegated by the County Counoil to point put what slops had been taken by them in the matter. Thoy were prepared to jolri tho Borough Council in a further guarantee for another' month.
t'r Muir said it was only putting off tho ovilday. Thorc was nothing to be gained by consenting to the guarantee. Tho bodies interested should tako action to bring a settlement of tho difficulty. He cerlaijp.., thought somo step Bhould bo taken to bring tho Conference together. The Mayor said the County Chairman had taken Boino action in tho matter, He hoped the Benevolent Society would "not sue tho District Board as that body would retaliate on tho Council, . Gas, Tho Gas Committee's report, as already published,'was rend and adopted, . Gas accounts amounting to £2l2s Id were passed for payment,

It was resolved that notice bo given accord* ingly,
The Overseer reported on sundry works done and required to bo done by the regular staff.
Cr Gapper reported on W. Frongnoll's contract in Smith-street. He moved that tho recommendation of the Overseer, that an extra chain and a half bo metalled in Smith. street, bo referred to tho Works Committee with power to net, anil an"extra half chain in Dixon-strcet be metalled at tho contract pticc.—Carried.
Tho remainder of the report was referred to the Works Committee, with power to act.
