PARLIAMENTARY
Legislative Council. TUESDAY, JUNE 26. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. The report of the Committee upon the Chine.se Immigration Amendment Bill was brought up and adopted without debate. The Attorney-General promised to enquire into the allegations made as to the unfitness o{ several. Officers connected with the Native Land Court. The Council adjourned to Friday next. The consideration of the tariff was resumed in committee. Captain Russell opposed the tea duty of sixpence per pound on the ground that if imposed it would remain a permanent tax on the people. He moved that the item bo struck out. The Premier wished it to be understood that the tax was part of thtit> general policy. Messrs Buchanan, Cowan, Duncan, and Fulton opposed, whilst Mr Hutchison went further, and said he would follow anyone who opposed. Mr Ballance supported the tax, in preference to seeing any other services interfered with. Many others spoke with legret that the question had been made a Government one.
The motion to strike the item out wa3 lost on the voices. A division was taken on the motion that the duty be sixpence, and was carried by a majority of eight: ayes, 43; noes, 35, Progress was reported.
