It was supposed that the man's leg found on New Brighton Beach was that of Jonathan Roberts, and a warder was sent from Lyttellon gaol to examine the boot which was on the foot. He at once said it was not a prison boot, This afternoon another leg and part of a thigh bone were found near where the first relic was discovered, It is now supposed they are the bones of a German who was drowned whilst fishing off Lyttelton Heads about three months ago. Aii inquest on the remains of Mrs Croots, who died after using the medicines of M. Duflot, the Canadian doctor, was commenced to-day, and evidence haying been heard, was adjourned to await the result of the post mortem examination. Two men, William Noble and J. Stewart, were charged to-day with the robbery of £lO2 12s 9d, the property of Mr P. Brodie, the proprietor of the Naval and Family Hotel, The oase was remanded for a week.
A public meeting was held at Lornestreet Hall to night, convened by the Mayor at the request of the members of the Auckland Financial Reform Association and other citizens for the purpose of considering the advisableness of proposing a reduction in the Government Estimates, when it was resolved—(l) Tliat while duly appreciating the reduction of Government expenditure already made, this meeting is of opinion that a very much larger reduction, say £200,000, oan and ought to be made, and so avoid the necessity for any large increase in taxation. (2) That in order to facilitate the economical administration of the present cumbrous sygtorn, government should be modified to suit the taxpaying power of the country," Some discussion ensued. It was proposed by G. M. Reed, "That in consideration of the financial position of the Colony, and tlio necessity for.' further retrenchment, the school age should be raised to sevon years, and free education should end with the fourth standard." An amendment for an adjournment for the consideration of this question was also proposed, but the division was so even when the motion was put that it was found impossible to count, and a special meeting is to be called to con. sider Mr Reed's motion, Auckland, Tuesday. Robert Morley assistant to Edson, chemist, committed suicide at his business premises, Queen-street this morning,immediately after his arrival, by swallowing a quantity of prusio acid. The nautical enquiry touching the wreck of the Hawea continued this morning, .Robert Thompson, Collector
cf Customs, New Plymouth, gave evidence iiß to the measurement of the anchor and chain, and said, in fine weather the bottom where the Hawea is, could be distinctly seen, and was all sandy, He did not profess to have made a survey of the place there j it might be rocks covered with sand. Captain Robertson, one of the nautical assessors observed that lie knew the place well, and had frequently seen rocks above sand a little further in than where the Hawea is. At this stage on application of Mr Gully, who appeared for the Customs, another adjournment was granted for the purpose of getting evidence of a diver to be engaged to make a good survey and inspection of the bottom,
