Saturday's Cup Matches, Masterton v, Greytpwn, The third and last match of the first round for the Senior Cup of tlu Wairarapa ljugby Union, tool? place at Masterton on Saturday afternoon bet\veei) the aoove Clubs, when the Masterton team again asserted their superiority over tliejr southern opponents by defeating them by two goals and two tries (S points) to one «ctal (3 points). Tlio first round has thus finished slightly in favor of Masterton who have placed a win and ut draw to their credit, Grey town has one win and Carterton a draw. The teams have to play another round, and those scoring the greatest number of wins in tho double round hold tho oup for the Season, hut as Mastertqn has a leg in" for it, should they he successful this year it becomes their absolute property. The following am tl(e teams and their places in the field. Greytown—Back, A. Beard j three-quarters, R Udy, A. Udy j Halves, J, Terry C. Beard (Oaptaip), Webster; Forwards, J. Beard, 0. Perry, H, Perry; forwards, P. H. Cox (Captain), W- Welch, G, Welch, W. Day, Chenpells, Kibblewhite, C. Bannister, Hounslow, and Pelling. Umpire, Mr W. Hirschberg, Before, Jlr ft Niuholla. The ground
was in good condition, the weather excellent, and everything was favorable for the match. There was a large number of spectators present including a fair sprinkling of ladies, and great interest was taken in the play, the visitors receiving as much support and encouragement from the onlookers, as the Home team. Mastarton kicked oil', and some light scrummaging took place near Grey town twenty-live, when A, Udy marked and transferred tlie play to the centre. E. Udy essayed a run, but was grassed by Hounslow beforo he could get way on. From the scrimmage that followed, J. Perry came through with a dribble, and being well backed np Greytowu twenty-five was again invaded. A. Udy by a splendid punt sent the leather down to Masterton twentyfive, where somo heavy scrtimuntging took place. A, Udy put in a good run, being collared by Cox, Some wild passing of the Grey town backs enabled C. Perry to get possession, and he finished a serviceable run near the centre flag. Webster got a mark and punted to C, Perry, who returned it well up into touch. The Greytown forwards worked the leather into Masterton territory, when a long kick by E. Udy compelled the home team to force down. The kick out was again returned by E. Udy, and scrummaging near the Masterton line followed. Clftnnells appeared at the head of a good forward rush, and play was taken up to the centre llag, where some most determined scrummaging took place, the forwards evincing a desire to do all the work. Chennells again distinguished himself by coming through his opponents, and being well backed up by Kibblewhite and Pulling they succeeded in compelling Greytown lo forcedown. Soon after the kick out Greytown was again defending their line, when a pot shot of H. Smith's, which went very near to scoring, compelled them to again force-down, The kick out was the signal for some fast play on both sides, E. Udy putting in 1 a good run but failed to get past Polling, who collared him in good ■ style. Scrummages were again the order, in which the home team proved . decidedly the best, and A. Beard had to accept tho inevitable to prevent a score. The Masterton forwards were showing good combination at this stage, and the Greytown lino was the scene of some very heavy scrummaging. Tlio visitors however responded gamely, and carried the play to the centre, but a determined rush ot their opponents took it back to their twentylive when some passing between Smith, Wallace, Pelling, and Hounslow enabled the latter to score a try for his team. C. Perry took the kick which resulted in a poster. Half time was shortly after called, tho play being in Greytown twenty-live, score Masterton one point, Greytown nil.
The second spell opened with some phenomenal play by the visitors. G, Beard kicked oil", Smith failed to take the leather, and 0. Perry fumbled it' H, Tully, by some smart following up' dribbled it over the line, when Mitchel' dropped on it before the Maslcrtoii back could relieve the danger, E. Uily kicked an undeniable goal. This score put the home team on their mettle. Cox kicked oil low down, and by fast following up the play was confined to the Grey town twenty-live. After light scrummaging H. Perry got possession, evaded all the opposing backs, and planted the ball under the posts. Smith kicked a goal from the place. Greytown's kick oil was met in a very determined manner, The iMasterton forwards were soon at work. W. andG. Welch, Hounslow and Day ffot a loose dribble on from which J. Perry got possession and ran in from the Greytown twenty-live, placing a third try to the credit of his team. Smith was again successful at the place kick. Som.j idea of the fast play c;ui be gathered when it is mentioned that the three goals were kicked from tries within ten minutes from the kick o(l', The visitors now pulled themselves together aiid made the ganie very interesting, Brvce and J, Terry were conspicuous by serviceable runs, the forward play of G. Udy and Mitchell being very effective, the former showing out in some excellent dribbling. Play was for h time in Masterton's twentyfive, but a run by C, Perry took it to the centre Hag, Smith and H. Perry, by running and passing got under their opponents goal, when from ascrummage tho former received a pass and tried a pot for goal, going somewhat wide of the mark, Grey town being forced down. A run by A, Udv, followed by a rush of Webster's, took the play to the home team's twenty-live, where Hounslow succeeded in stopping E. Udy, who had obtained possession and looked very dangerous, \V. Day and (.1, Welch got way on, and soon relieved the pressure, when W. Welch came out with a run, and play was carried to the Greytown tweuty-five. Scrummages followed, in which the liomb team were seen to advantage, A, Beard having to kick into touch in goal to avert a score, Greytown now became the aggressors, ftnd the Masterton lino was in imminent danger for a time, till Smith, by q, good run, aided by 0. D,annistor and Wallace took the sphere to the centre. E. Udy goon neutralised this by putting in his best run, upsetting about four of the opposing team, bofore lie was splendidly gassed by Smith, Joe Perry shone out with another run, transferring the play to the visitor's twenty-Eve, where scrummaging of a light character took place. W. Welch got hold of the leather from some loose play, and literally run through the whole of his opponents, and before they could grasp the situation—or rather the playerhe placed n fqurth try lo the home team's credit, 0, Perry wade another good attempt, but failed ta increase the score. No side was then called, the score being Masterton, 2 goals 2 tries (8 points) to Greytown I goal (3 points). The game was played in excellent spirits, and w, taken altogether, a very good exhibition of football,
Juiiiar Gup Match, The third heat of the junior cup matches was played off at Greytown on Saturday between the second fifteens of the Groytciwn and Bed Star jMasteyUw) cfohs, and resulted in a
victory for the Stars by one point to nil. The Greytown forwards were heavier in the scrum than those of llieii opponents, but were not so jfcd in the loose. The Star backs rancid kicked well, while those of the losers weie completely smothered by the fast following up of tho opposing forwards, who carried the play down the field time alter time, The play throughout was of the most determined nature, but more especially after the score in tho second spell, The victors had the bist of the game all through, and astonished even their warmest admirers by their play. The ground was in fairly goud order, and the weather everything that could be desired.
