Before Mr Von Stunner, R.M,

Clemen Andresen was chargi with being drunk yesterday in Hal street.

Sergeant Price said this was a first offence as regards being drunk, but the prisoner had been travelling round with periodicals and getting a deposit from different people. He had in one instance gone to a private house and thrown the paper down before the lady

of tbe house and insisted upon her looking over tliem. He took advantage of the absence of the husband to call at different houses, and in an offensive manner to force his periodicals upon the notice of the inmates, and in many instances he got money on the promise of delivering the books. His Worship said ho could not understand how people could be so foolish as to part with their money

before the article was delivered. He could understand their putting their names to a list, and promising to pay on delivery. He strongly cautioned the prisoner. For the offence with which he was charged he would be fined five shillings. Breach of the new By-laws, John Butcher was Charged by the Inspector of Nuisances, with allowing his cows to wander at large on a public highway. Accused pleaded guilty and was fined 2s and costs 2s.

John Hoskins was charged with a

breach of the Public Health Act in allowing a closet to become a nuisance Accused did not put in an appearance. The offence was proved by the Inspector of Nuisances. Accused had left the premises and was now at Featherstone. The owner of the property did not reside in Masterton. Fined 10s and costs 7s.

Charles McKillop was charged with a breach of the dog registration Act. Accused pleaded guilty, but said Mr Ingram ought to have given him notice. The Bench said that was a poor excuse. It was 110 part of the duty of the Inspectaor to give owners of unregistered dogs notice to register them, Fined 5s and costs 7s. Robert Aitken for a similar offence was fined Is and costs.
