Wellington, Monday, The Government yesterday received from the Agent-General, Londou, a cablegram conveying the intelligence of the death of Mr Justice Johnstone who left this colony a short time ago for the benefit of his health,
At the Supreme Court this morning reference was made to the death of Judge Johnston. A full bench and bar and a number of visiting barristers was present. Tho Chief Justice addressing the Attorney-General said he well knew how well the late Judge performed his duties. He was possessed of great natural ability, and his loss would be deeply regretted by the bench, the bar and the public. Sir P. Whitaker on behalf of the New Zealand bar said thirty years ago it had been his privilege to welcome as Attorney-General tho late Judge to the shores of New Zealand and subsequently to congratulate him on his appointment as Judge. During the thirty years he had administered justice in its broadost sense and, not only as a Judge but also as a citizen and neighbour, lie had been highly esteemed by all, and was a notable example to the legal profession. It was the first occasion in New Zealand a Judge had died a Judge, as all previous holders of the office had resigned before death. In conclusion he regretted the death of so distinguished a Judge, and trusted he would receive the reward of the just. The Court out of respect to the deccassd adjourned till to-morrow. Copper Ims been discovered near Oakura. Some specimens were sent to Dr Hector who reports that they contain, besides silver and copper, traces of arsenic,sulphur and antimony. Some prospectors have pegged off claims and intend to open the reef to obtain a fairer insight as to the quantity and quality of the ore.
