The British Defences.
London, May 29.
In the House of Commons to-day, Lord George Francis Hamilton, First Lord of the Admiralty, stated that, in his opinion, an invasion of England was very remote. He mentioned that the Government were doing everything that was necessary to secure the safety of the colonies' and the commercial defences, but many more cruisers were required to protect the merchant shipping and coaling stations.
In the House of Lords a motion of the Earl of Carnarvon that the naval authorities and shipowners should cooperate for the general defeuce was carried,
Admiral Hornby declares that England requires 144 additional fast cruisers,
Lieutenant • General Sir Andrew Clarke, RE,, is urging the Imperial Government to increase the number of cruisers, with a view of protecting the means of communication between the United Kingdom and its dependencies.
