MASTERTON CHESS CLUB.

There was again a good attendance at the Masterton Chess Club last night, and several new members were enrolled, The match Masterton v Opaki was resumed, the following being the result of the. games played:— Captain Holmwood (Opaki) played the King's Knight's opening against Mr Bakewell and lost. Mr Rockell (Masterton) essayed the Blackmar Gambit against Mr Kummer, but by moving the wrong Knight at his tenth move lost the game. Tho Rev. W. E. Paige (Masterton) played Mr E. Holmwood, who adopted the Sicilian game. The contest was a very even one for some time, but Mr Paige eventually won by a very noat bit of play. Mr Kummer (Opaki) played the Zukertort opening to Mr Eawson, and won after a very long struggle, Mr B. Holmwood (Opaki) led off with the Queen's Pawns oponing against Mr Bakewell, The game was very eveuly contested, until Mr Bakewell gave his opponent an opportunity to mate on the move, which was promptly accepted, The score now stands: Masterton 7, Opaki 5. Four games remain to be played.
