Sydney, May 1. A Ballarat train ran off the rails on the northern line this evening. It was completely wrecked. The fireman and driver had a very narrow escape. The Government have decided to replace the present trams by the cable system. May 2. The Execntive of the Rabbit Commission have communicated with the New Zealand Government requesting that the report on the epidemic of fowl cholera near Canterbury be forwarded to them, and also to send small quantities of the blood of diseased lowls in vacuum tubes, - Melbourne, May 2< At an influential public meeting it was resolved to ask the Government to introduce a Bill imposing on Chinese <i poll tax o? £'2oo, and a residential tax of £2O. Tho meeting strongly protested against relegating to the Imperial Government the right to legislate on the Chinese question, which was a matter purely for the colonies to consider. The Government have prohibited the landing of all Chinese passengers for the future.
