The money for the expenses of Mr Warwick's Native Football Team has been guaranteed in Napier, The team is to leave for the old country by tho July direct steamer, and is timed to arrive in England on the 22nd September. The Maori prophet seems to be in trouble. According to tho Taraniki Herald, the court bailiff hasjust proceeded to Parihaka to distrain on Te Whiti's goods on a judgment summons for over £IOO obtained by Mr Stitt of Opunake. It will be- seen by a notification in .our amusement column that the Rink will be open as usual to day, and also on Monday afternoon, but not in the evening of the latter day, the theatre being then engaged for 1 tho annual election o; the SchoolCommittee.
A matter lias been brought before the Houbo of Commons which serves to show how persistent some persons are on the question of vaccination. Mr Rucliie, replying to one of the members, stated that one man had been fined for non-vaccina-tion of two of his children twenty-seven times, the penalties amounting to £22 10s., costs £22 9s. There was, however, not considered to be any hardship in hia instance, as the fines have been paid by the Anti-vaccination Society of Kent. By a new process, milk is now being utilised for the manufacture of a powder resembling sugar both in form and appearance. The milk is reduced by evaporation to a Bolid state. It is called "powdered milk," and must become excesdingly valuable for travellers by sea or land making what are known as instantaneous beverages, such as those concocted from extract of cufl'ee, and cocoa. Indeed, in scores of ways powdered milk will be found invaluable in the culinary Mr 6. M. Wood, of Masterton, must certainly take the palm for mammoth pumpkins. Last night there was to be seen at Mr F. T, Redman's establishment a veritable giant, grown by him at Kurupuni. This monster weighed 150 lb3, and is over three feet hifh. Mr Wood also has another pumpkin which turns the scale at 701bs, and is itself by no means a small vegetable of its class. There was quite a crowd of sight-seers at Mr Redman's shop during the evening, and as the pumpkin is still on vieiv, we may assume it, will attract as much
attention to-day. At a* meeting held lust evening by the members of the Masterton Amateur
Dramatic Club, it was resolved to put H. J. Byron's masterpiece " The Guv'nor" into rehearsal, and to engage Mr Harry Marshall to play the character of the deaf boatman, The Club has lately added several new members to its list, both ladies and. gentlemen. The casto in the piece selected is an exceedingly heavy one, there being no less than eighteen characters in it. With plenty of new blood, a first-rate scenic artist, and the lessee of the Theatre among its members, the Club out to be in a position to produce some capital pieces this winter. Mr Jaa. Jones, of the Eketahuna General Store, Temperance Hotel, and Carrying Depot;, has an announcement in
another column which should be of interest to tho numerous persons patronising his establishment. Mr /ones has lately enlarged and considerably improved his premises, and his present stock would he hard to surpass at any country store, and is equalled by few town ones, Besides being amply provided with everything that a general storekeeper, draper, and ironmonger, ousjlit to have on hand, tho proprietor has also in the hotel department, firstclass accommodation for travellers, and attached to it eqiial provision for their horses.
' Felix,' in the Australasian of the 31st March says The Melbourne Cricket Club Committee met on Wednesday, in the pavillion, and the Secretary submitted the accounts in connection with the English tour, which showed a loss in round numbers of £3,500. A 1 big item was the amount paid to W. W. Read, namely £1137 10s made up of £IOOO forhis services, and £137 10s, amount out of pocket during the trip. Mr Read wanted Ll5O for the amount out of pocket, but it was reduced to L 137 10s as given above. These figures were enough to take one's breath away, regarded from the pure standpoint of amateur cricket.' A tolegram received in Masterton today advises that cable communication is at present partially cut off between the Colonies and Europe, the Darwin over, land line being interrupted between Dalywaters and Katherine. A Maori chief named Ihaka Ngawihi, died at Otaraia, Lower Valley, on Tuesday. The deceased chief, who was nearly 90 years of age, was married toßipeka Warawara, sistor to Jlatene Tauwhare, a chief now living at Pitone.
The Wairarapa North County Council Wheel Tire By-law comes into force on Ist May, and as we understand its provisions will be strictly enforced, it behoves those interested to take timely warning. Thoy should, therefore, get their stores and firewood home as soon as possible, and not have to afterwards make one horse do two-horse duty.
Regarding the English Football Team which shortly arrives in this colony, a Home settler to the N.Z. Times says that it should be distinctly understood that the team is not exclusively English, It is a British organisation of a representative character, and the colors worn will be red, white and blue, and on a cap to match will be a suitable inscription, It is' estimated that the tour will cost upwards of £12,000, Somo of the xCnglish sporting papovs call them a scratch team, and the Rugby Union have placod them under the ban of professionalism.

At a meeting of the Masterton Lodge of the Court Loyal Enterprise on Thurs> day, it was decided that the officers should proceed to Mauriceville this (Saturday) evening, for tho purpose of opening a Lodge of Foresters there, which shall be known as the Kopuaranyi Court, and to which there is promise of a membership of twenty-eight persons, Tho District Officers from "Wellington will specially attend at this, tho opening ceremony.
Messrs Lowes and lorns add to their extensive list of stock for Wednesday next a line of 200 fat wethers, and the firm desire us to call special attention to [the breeding; ewes advertised, being young and of a'very superior class. They are only 2, 3, and i years old. The sale will be a very large one, and nearly the whole of the stock is ot good quality. The local option polling for the To Aro licensing district resulted in decisive majorities against the increase of licenses. The number of votes for increase of publicans' licenses was 8 and against 84; and the number recorded in favor of an increase of New Zealand wine licenses was 9, with 87 against. In the Lambton district (the polling for which took place on Thursday) there was a majority of 14 against the increase of publicans' licenses, and 14 against the increase of wine licenses.
Dr Hector arrived in Maaterton this morning. Ho intends to make a geological examination of the Fern ridge District, having special regard to its coal bearing prospects, and after doing so he return? to Wellington 011 Monday. This afternoon, we understand, tliafc he will in company with Mr Geo. Beetham M.H.R, visit and inspect the cutting at the Ruamahunga Railway bridge, from which the whale's tooth and fossiled bone was regently excayated. It is said that Messrs Hogg, Renal), Prangnell and Temple have been selected by ballot by the local Liberal Association to contest the Masterton S,chool election on Monday, As several of those (including Messrs Boddington, Lowes, and Pay ton,) who have fought on the other side at preceding elections, are unlikely to como forward again as candidates, tho four delegates of the Liberal Association have an excellent ohance of success.
