THE JUDGE'S CHARGE.

Wellington, April 9.

In his charge to the Grand Jury, Judge Richmond said the calendar was one of unusual length, but with the exception of two cases, none were of great public interest. One was the charge of child murder, in which His Honor said that it was competent for the petty jury to bring in a verdict of concealment of birth, and the other case was one of arson, in which one prisoner had turned informer. His Honor pointed out that accomplices evidence could not be received without being corroborated.

Masterton Road Board. The monthly meeting of the Board was held on Saturday last. Presen£fl Messrs R, D. Dagg, (chairman), w, B. Buick, and A. Johnston. The ~ minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, CORKESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was then read:— From Treasury advising payment of £'7B 2s 6d for deferred payment thirds to Board. Prom Provincial District Auditor re auditing accounts. From Commissioner Property Tax Department re Native .'.(Res.. From Clerk Eketahuna Road Board re interpretation of Clause 3, Road Board Act. From Mauriceville Road Board • re repairs to Jackson's road at South Mauriceville. From Colonial Treasurer advising payment of deferred; payment, thirds. From Railway Department re representation made by the . deputation which waited upon the Minister of Public Works on the 9th March, stating that the Minister: regrets the circumstances do not enable him to alter-the decision previously communicated, viz., that one "crossing only can be allowed, either at 73 miles 2 chains, or 73 miles 29 chains, jgJ may be deemed most desirable by W Board. From Commissioner Property Tax Department stating that he had forwarded vouchers to Treasury for £93155. RESOLUTIONS/ It was resolved that the necessary steps be taken to get the road legalised which runs through Messrs Elkins and Harvey's property on the Opald. That the bridge which recently collapsed near Mr Gorringe's homestead on the Fernridge, be re-erected. That this Board is willing to take over the: maintenance of the maiii roads in their district, provided they are empowered to strike and levy rates. That the Clerk take the necessary steps to fill vacancies in Nos. 2 and 3 wards, caused by the retirement of Messrs Dagg and Johnston, and likewise give uotice of the annual meeting of ratepayers in the first week of May. That a special rate of 2|d in the & will be ' levied on certain sections in the Kopuarangi Survey District to meet invest and annual charges on £BOO $k rowed for the extension of the Wangaehu road. A special rate of 5-Bths of one penny in the £ will also be levied to meet interest &c. on £2OO, borrowed for the. , purpose of forming a branch line leading through section 9 to section 121, 129, Kopuarangi Survey District. That a sum of £2los be expended in improving the road leading to Mr Donald McKenzie's property at Dreyertown. Accounts amounting to £245 were ; passed for payment. 1 Prior to dispersing, the members of the Board expressed the deep regret they felt at the death of one- of their members-Mr R. R,' Welch—since their last meeting, and, in order to show their sympathy-with the bereaved i family, the Clerk was authorised to ■ send a letter embodying the resolution. I The meeting then adjourned.
