MASTERTONSTATESCHOOL
Visit of the inspector.
Mr Lee, who has recently returned from a trip to the Old Country, paid an official visit to the Masterton public school on Tuesday, for the purpose of examining the scholars of the sixth and seventh standards. It will be remembered the annual examination took place prior to the Christmas holidays, under the supervision of the Head Master, the two higher standards being left over till the arrival of the Inspector himself. Whilst nporting on the results, Mr Lee spoke in very complimentary terms of the success achieved by the various candidates, and expressed himself asmuchpleased with theirwork. The writing, hesaid, was very satisfactory, but they must not consider- 1 it altogether perfection, as some writing he had seen in the Newtown School was slightly above it. In arithmetic they were very strong this year, and he considered it a feather in their cap, as it required the most ability. Their grammar and geography were also very good. In fact, the whole of the work was extremely creditable to both teacher and scholars. The passes were the strongest yet attained at the Masterton School. Out of eighteen presented in the sixth standard, seventeen passed, eleven of whom cleared the arithmetic papers. In the seventh standard, there were no failures. During the reading of the results, there were present, the head master (Mr Grundy), assistant head master (Mr Waite), and the Chairman of the School Committee (Mrßodelington). Appended are the list of passes:—Standard Vl.—John Barnes, John Cole, Robert Dixon, Peter Gordon, Arthur Hathaway, Allan Holmwood, Tom Hill, Fred. King, Andrew McEwen, Robert Sage, Herbert Muir; Ella Barron, Ella Chapman, Edith D'Arcy, Sarah Jenkins, Annie Kean, Helen McKenzie.
Standard VII.— Mary Boddington, Alice Brown, Margaret Smith.
