Tremendous Rainfall at" Westport, Fearful Floods, Westport, Friday evening, (Sent by steamer to Greymouth for transmission). This town lias been cut off com* pletely from telegraph communication with eftfde world since Wednesday night. fFor three hours on Thursday morning there was a burst of tho heaviest rain ever experienced since the settlement of our town, and'the greater portion of the borough was flooded, especially the low lying portions, to a depth of soveral feet, No groat damago was done. in town, but much discomfort and inconvenience was caused. The Buller river was in high flood, and it was found that telegraph communication was interrupted. The Eeeftou coach made an attempt to go up country yesterday morning, but at one place on the road (" The Overflow") the horses had to swim, and the coach was compelled to return to town. A second start was made this morning, the telegraph lineman being a passenger. Five miles out of town the coach stuck in the-middl.e of the road, and tho driver ondeavored to push through on horseback with the mail, but after crossing the Buller River nine miles from . Westport, found the road completely blocked with heavy slips. The whole hillside upon which the road is constructed appeared to have slipped into the river. Several telegraph poles were down with wire twisted or entangled, and tho wreck covered with debris. Tho repairs to the telegraph line are expected to take three days, as material has to bo carried on. men's backs five miles. It is feared that one large bridge on the road has been carried away, as decking of a bridge has been seen floating down the river. Altogether very extensive damage has been done to the main road, and the Buller County Council has no funds to repair the damage.
