Favored with fine woather, good flßj sport, andsplendid manogement, tho E|H first day's racing of ~tlio' Wairarapa -]B| Jockey Club, held on the Moroa fCfllfj Course, Grey town, yesterday, was an AH undeniable success, and deserving of a .IjH larger attendance, there being not 99 more than GOO visitors present at any one time during the day. Without 196 -fear of contradiction,; we can safely say there has not been better racing, 'jJBSt nor such" exciting finishes on course in the Valley. A few meetings - of this stamp would very* soon bring ' -v larger attendances to witness' tlM|- .?.■ v once'popular pastime, which has i® - caste in our district! owing; greatly to the influence of the betting ring. All the wins .yesterday were undoubtedly won on their true merits. -The " | tremendous ovation accorded to'Mv . ■ Ilios. .Thompson •on Little Scrub I wimiing the Wairarapa Cup, was duo ■ to the respect and esteem in.'which ' that gentleman is held by; all olassea, - for the' honest way in which he always . runs his horses, aud it was very - gratifyify to see betting men and horse - owners standing in the -saddling, paddock, anxious to get a chance of' . congratulating " Tommy," It mil be seen by the time affixed at the end of each race, that the records are among the fastest yet obtained in the Wairarapa, notably in the hack races.' The - course, with the exception of being a bit hard, was in splendid condition. There was one Totalisator on the ground, which was so erected that.it could be worked both from the outside ■ and inside of the lawn. Owing to the ,s ■ indisposition of Mr R. McFarl«|, 1 - who is at present suffering f?p sciatica, the machine was worked . by Messrs Webster and Tocker, • who succeeded in passing through a little over £9OO. There was a large ; number of speelers present with their usual trappings, aud, judging by their 'i busy appearance, one would almost ' be led to believe that Greytown had already realized on their much talked of quartz reefs. At short intervals the Greytown Brass Band, under its able leader, Mr M. Yarnham, enlivened one's spirits with some choice selections. The publicans and refreshment booths were fairly well patronised, as was also the luncheon provided by Mr A. L, Whyte, in the grand staad. The latter for quality, as well as quantity, ' could not be excelled, and was, in fact, equal to many banquets which we have sat down to. Mr A, 'Grigg's outside refreshment booth was also / well supplied, and, with a number of assistants, his time was kepljjjfell occupied attending to the inner {rants of his customers.' Subjoined' will be found the result ofthe various events: .. Handicap Hcbdle Race, 35 sovs, second ' " horse 5 sovs, over hurdles 3ft Gin. One- ' and-a-half miles. Mr H. The three horses went away together till after . . the first hurdle was cleared, when Freebooter assumed the lead, followed ■ by Kangaroo. This position was •' • maintained to the finish, the black horse jumping splendidly and winning, by fully six lengths. Owing to Freebooter's hind leg being swollen his chance " , of getting home first seemed doubtful,. ' consequently Kangaroo ran up ohief favorite on the machine.
