There was a good deal of discrepancy in the valuations which were elicited in the evidence in yesterday's land compensation cases, While Messrs Rawson, Sellar, and Lowes for the claimants were pretty much the same m their estimates, those of Messrs lllingworth, Fulcher, T. Maokay, senr,, and Connall, as representing the Government, although they agreed together, were much below in their approximations, in fact about 50 per cent under. For instance, the Government valuation for Mr Macara's property averaged from L 45 to 150 for buildings and about LBS for the land,' while that gentleman's own valuators plaoed the buildings at from L9O to Lloo, and the land from L9sto LIOO, The quantity of lnnd in this instance was 1 acre 3 roods, practically 2 acres, and the' tenements were stable, small cottage and stall, and the whole situated noar the Mauriceyille lime kiln.
Trout in'and around Masterton seem to be very shy at present and practically none are being cauuht, for the water is so shallow that they going into places of hiding, such as under logs at the river brinks directly anyone approaches. This habit entirely prevents angling and it unfortunately leads to tlje fish boing caught by hand and we believe that car, tain persons are so securing them by feeling in these nooks. When the trout do make their appearance at all in thesfcreams it is in tho evening, and then they devote their entire attention to the brown beetle which is the fly stage of the Odoritria Zealandica the troublesome grass grub, These beetles fly in myriads just over the surfaceoftlie jvatpr and thefishreally wont at present rise'to anything olsu, Although this peculiarity is discouraging to fishermen, it is almost a matter of importance to graziers and sheep farmers, for there is no doubt that the trout is proving itself a grand natural enemy to what, in its destruction of grass, has made itself one of the farmers greatest peßta, and .will render material service in keep, inp it under,

Mr Johnston takes over the business oil the first of March, and we wish him every success in his new undertaking, for which, by a long experience, he is bo thoroughly qualifisd, Fees of Doctors,—'The fee of doctors is an item that very many persons are interested in at present. We believe the schedule for visits is §3.00, which would tax a man confined to his bed for a yoar, and in need of a daily visit, over SI,OOO a year for medical attendance alone 1 And one single bottlo of Dr Soulo's American Hop Bitters taken in time would save the SI,OOO and all the year's sickness, "Post."
