CARTERTON SPORTS.

Committee —Messrs W. Downard, A. McKenzie, J. A. Dudson, A. J. Armstrong, A. Booth, H. G. Snodgrass, A, Mercer, F. W, Seed. Judge—Mr A. Armstrong. Starter—Mr A. Booth. Handicappers Messrs Downard, Mercer and Armstrong. Timekeeper —Mr A. J, Armstrong.

These Sports were held on the Carterton Show Grounds yesterday, but the yery wet and rough weather greatly interfered with their success, and limited the attendance of the public to about 300. However those who were managing affairs, made the best of things, and all considered the affair- passed off as successfully, as could ( be expected with such an unfavorable influence as bad weather. What was termed a Grand. Fete was also held in oonjunotion with the Sports, and the sundry games and amusing diversions of which it consisted, did much to enliven the public present. The affair was held, we we should mention, with the object of clearing offithe debt on the Church Parsonage. The following is the programme of the Sports, wjth the results of the different, events ;

Running high leap, 8 eutries; Biddle (4ft llin) 1. Anniversary Handicap, G. Parker 1, A. Hooker 2, C. Bennett 3., Tug of War Bon each side, Hooker's, side the strongest Walking Match, 1 mile, W. Waterson 1, J. Callister 2, A. King 8. Hop, step, aiid jump, 6 entries; Tutu (87ft sin) 1, Biddle 2. Hurdle Pace over 4 lpdles, 440 yards, A, Hooker" 1, G. Parker 2, F.W, Peters 8. Sack Race, A. Hooker 1, Biddle 2. Obstaole Race, J Peters 1. Usher 2. Consolation Race, 440 yds, Biddle 1, C. Bennett 2. Thisconchu ded the programme, and the days sports were got off ill good time by about 6 o'clock.
