Chamberlain, Crowe, and Maunsell. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. DEPUTATION. Messrs R. S. Hawkins and W. Jeßsen waited on the Board with respect to the alterations in the boundaries of the Akiteo and Maurice-, villa Road Boards, The former gentleman referred to the promises that had been made by the old Council, in support of their petitions. The Council had then advertised the alteration of ridings, and the Masterton Road Board had. given the Mauriceville Board a distinct promise to create new boundaries. After the latter Board had done everything required by law, they were informed that the Masterton Board had not given the proper notice, and therefore the matter fell through. He thought that the Council should comply, with the request of the Akiteo and Mauriceville Boards, and let legal The kctioii against the Akiteo Board was.a very unjust one, and ho hoped the Council ■ would sea justice done to them.
Mr Jessen said Mr Hawkins had so hilly explained the riding question that there was no necessity for him to say any more, but with regard to Mauriceville he would point out that it appeared to lie a question between the Masterton and Mauriceville districts, as the members at present representing the Masterton Biding, in which Mauricevillo was included, were grab, bing all the rates from the riding for the Masterton District. He hoped the Council would see their way to constitute the Mauriceville riding. Cr Dagg denied the statement made by Mr Hawkins to the effect that the petition fell through owing to neglect on the part of the Masterton Road Board. The fault, he contended, lay very much with the Council. The Masterton Road Board "did all in their power, but failed through not having sufficient signatures. The Chairman having intimated that the matter would be fully considered, the deputation thanked the Council and withdrew. The following is an abridged report of the Finance Committee: Or Mackay was hppointed Chairman of Committee. The Treasurer reported a net debit of £BS Is lid, and debtor balance as shown per cash account £202 lis 2d, receipts since last meeting £7l 6s 2d. That in the opinion of the Committee the several Road Boards in the County should be urged to make every effort to get in all rates due by the 30ch June with a view of securing the whole of the subsidy payable to each board. That the Road Board should be asked to explain the reason of withholding the certificate of rates collected up to 30th June last in their district, the remit of which, so far as the Council were concerned, is that the sum of £ 68 3s lOd already paid to the Council on account of the 75 percent advance on Wharearaaßoad District rates has been deducted from the ceititicate givej bv the Property Tax Commissioner in respect of subsidy due to the Castlepoint riding,- That with reference to the question of expending a portion of Mr Holmes Warren's rates on' the EketahuuH-Tiraumea section of the Eketahnna-Tinui road, referred by the Council ut its meeting on December 13th last tor the consideration of the Committee. The Committed find that the amount of separate rate paid for current year (£32 16s 6d] has all been pledged for maintenance, repairs &c m the Cashpoint ridings, and so far as present rate is concerned the Committee is unable to make a reoommendation favorable to the request being granted. The Council is about to take steps to annex the whole of Mr Warren's property to the Alfredton riding, and when this is done all the sepai ate rates paid by him will be expended on the section of road mentioned in his application. That Mr A' b W, Sedcole be appointed sub-col-lector in the Pahiatua riding to collect all sums under £l, due on Village Settlement sections, at a commission of 2 J per cent on the sura collected. HASTWELL TOLL-GATE. Prior to making arrangements for the re lettiug of the various toll-gates, MrW. Jessen waited on the Council, with reference to the injustice of charging the Mauriceville settlers toll for merely coming off the Mauriceville Koadj which adjoins the toll-house, on to the main road. It was a great drawback, and most, unfair, ~as settlers had to cross over tbe main Road to go to the blacksmith, and to the adjacent sawmill. If they were compelled to pay, the settlers could avoid passing through the gate on the north side, by getting a permit from the Natives to go across their reserve. As Mauricevilla paid separate rates to Masterton, he considered it only fait to pass through the gate without paying toll. . After a short discussion, it was decided to call the Engineer in for his opinion on the matter.Mr Bremner considered it would be a dangerous precedent to exempt the Mauriceville settlei s. By so doing it was open to abuse, and ho did not think they should be exempted more than anyone
The Council then informed Mr tfessen that they fere not in a position to graqt the concession. HE-fcETTING Of TOLLS, Or Yon Reijen thought it advisable as the railway w expected to ba open to tiljetsbuna before the end of twelve months, to alter tho conditions of the Harwell toll.gjite, so far as the term of lease was oonoeriied, The Chairman thought the suggestion avpfv goodouo,an4 it WI|S decided that tenders for toll gates be cullec! on same conditions .as last year, :with the except sioa of the Hastwell. gate, wbiob • is to bo form uutlft ud .dm sopob'
per month till end of year, tenders to close on 25th January. On the motion of Cr Crewe, it was resolved to advertise tenders in the Pahiatua and Woodville papers, as well as the two local papers, MAURICEVILLE POUND.
Mr Jeaseh again interviewed the. Council with reference to. their giving 13 towards the payment of a fee board for the Mauriceville pound,' The Board were already'indebted to the Council to the extent of £4, which the • latter bodv had paid as a portion of tLe • expense in erecting the pound, but if the sum asked for was not forthcoming ". . thby could not pay the £4, so the Council would be the loser..
The grant was refused, Councillors being of opinion that the pound was of more benefit to Mauriceville than the County. ■: <
