The burns in that 'locality are very bad, and will result in a heavy loss to all settlers interested. We have just been informed that Mr T. A man named Thomas Barret has been arrested at Brisbane on tho charge of poisoning his daughter, The act is supposed to liave been caused owing to dislike he had taken to the man tvlio was to marry his daughter, Emma Barret. Morphia had been administered to the girl, from the effects of which she died on tho morning of her wedding. Tho prisoner and deceased lately ai rived from England, and went to tho Croydon goldiields. The Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral' and Agricultural Society's Rain olid Ewe Fair will be held at Carterton on Wednesday, 15th February. This annual sale and exhibition of sheep is deservedly popular,, not only with breeders, but with all those who take'an interest in stock, and thore will doubtless be on this ocoasion the same representative gathering as in former years. ' It was quite anticipated that at last night's meeting of the Borough Council, the Water question, and the resolutions' passed the evening before at. the public meeting, would be the occasion of at l«ast discussion, if not of action. The Mayor, liowover. happened to be late in arriving, explaining that he had mistaken the time of meeting. He, therefore, came just a minute after it had been resolved that the resolution pusaed at Monday night's meeting, as received from Mr Thomas Mackay, the Chairman, should be laid on the table. Mr Renall, not knowing this action had been, taken, moved that tho public meotino's resolution should bo adopted. On,however, being informed of the resolution which had already been carried, he grasped the situation, and recognising that he was. just 100 late, withdrew his motion,-. Two amateurs, who wove interested in its working, put in a little volunteer labour th's morning, and got the cart full in two minutes and a half. The Douglas pump used to take twenty minutes.
The Grand Master of the Wellington District of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows, Bro. John Furnisß, visits the Loyal Masterton Lodge on Tuesday, 17th January, Last evening a party. of prospectors arrived in Masterton from 'Tinui, with some very good-looking specimens of gold-bearing quartz We hear that the' reef from which it was taken, has been known to settlers in the Tinui district for the past.five and twenty years.

. Some swaggers yesterday rested themselves on the main road at Kurupuni and evidently lit a fire there, for Mr T, W. Shute observed tho grass burning in the neighborhood where they had camped. He obtained prompt assiftance to extinguish the flames, butnotbeforoa considerable patch of herbage along the road, both outside the fence and within it, .had been burned. Mr Eton junr who passed on horseback at the time also rendered valuable assistance Had the fire spread in the preseut dry state of the field a very coiv siderable amount of damage might- have been done.
