MASTERTON-MONDAY.

UTTERING A FORGED CHEQUE.

Charles Hamilton was charged at the Resident Magistrates Court this morning, before Messrs W. H. Beetham and A. W.. Renall J.P.'s with having on 2nd January.il instant, uttered a cheque for L 27 10s purporting to be signed by Holmes Warren, and with intent to defraud, he knowing the same to be forged. Sergeant Price presecuted for the Crown, and Mr 0. P. Skipper defended the case for the accused.

Walter Smart, manager of the Club Hotel, gave evidence as to the receipt by Mm of the cheque in question and as lo an' advance of LlOlQs being made on it, He thought at the time that the signature on the cheque was Mr Warren's, from whom the prisoner said he had received it.

Wm. Neill deposed that he gave the accused a blank cheque on the evening of the 2nd January, he being told by the prisoner that it was required for Mr Meredith. R, R. Coleman on oath said that the cheque before the Court was presented at the Bank of New Zealand, and returned marked " no a:count," as Mr Warren did not bank with them.

Mr Holmes Warren, sheepfarmer, Tiraumea, deposed that.neither the writing in the body of the cheque nor the signature were his, He had never given nccused at any time a cheque on the Bank of New Zealand.

Constable Salmon gave evidence as to the arrest of accused who was the worse for liquor at the time. This concluded the evidence, and the prisoner, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial at the April sitting of the Supreme Court.

T\RATAHI-CARTERTONROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held at Carterton on Saturday last. Present:—Messrs H. R. Bunny, (Chairman), N. Grace, J. Rayner, W. Parker, E. W. Dorset, fl, Braithwaite, Jas. Stevens, and W. Booth. The. minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reporteda debit balance of £24917s 2d, The Clerk reporting in reference to the proposed loan for No 1 ward of £I7OO under the Looal Bodies Loans Act 1886, stated that the necessary steps, had been taken, and that they were waiting information and further -instructions on the subject from the Government. Correspondence' was read:—From the Property Tax Department re alterations to valuations of properties; from Colonial Treasurer re subsidies in future; from Colonial Secretary acknowledging the information as to the result of the poll for the £I7OO loan; from Colonel Johnstone asking permission to take gravel from the Board s pit, application refused; from Mr T. Waldeu re previous letter to to clear out the drain on Ms property stating that he had no such drain to be cleared out; application from Mr W. Booth to transfer certain property in No 6 ward from Mr E. Eagle to Messrs Booth&Co, granted. MrHugan waited on the Board in reference to the falling of the trees which he had done on the Education Reserve Road and said that there were some trees still, standing along the said road, and that he was quite willing to let them remain, and that he would not trouble the Board in the event of their falling and breaking the fence, Mr Rayner asked that tenders be oalled for metalling about 28 chains of the main road It was resolved that Messrs Wil-

liains and Beetlmm be requested to have a gate erected at the entrance of the gravel pit, at the Waingawa. Mr Derrick reported that the culvert near Mr Udy's South Carterton required cleaning out, and enlarging as the present one was not sufficient to take the flood waters. After some discussion it was resolved to have a new drain cut near the fence, from Dalefield road to Mr Stevens' sawmill, as that would do away with the culvert and also widen the road, and that tho Bprpugh Council be asked to contribute towards getting the work done. Some, accounts were passed for payment, and the .meeting terminated,

MASTERTON-OPAKI JOCKEY CLUB. A meeting of the Masterton-Opaki Jockey Club was held on Saturday last at the Club Hotel, Masterlon. Present, Messrs T. E. Chamberlain (President) in the chair, R. Welch, J. Ross, E, Chamberlain, (J. H. Yates, W. lorns, W. B. Buick, and T. Mackay (Secretary). The previous meeting's minutes were read and confirmed, The receipts from the summer meeting were shown as, £616. Accounts amounting lo £9B }ss fOd .were ordered tp be pajd as funds permitted. Several. members tendered their resignations, but as most of them dated since the programme of the summer meeting had been drawn out, the Club resolved that the resignations could not be accepted until the season's subscriptions had been paid.
