MAURICEVILLE SPORTS.

, Boxing Day nt Mauriceville opened with a heavy downpour of rain and everybody felt disappointed, seeing that there hud'been so much preparation for enjoyment. Notwithstanding thol'ain, crowds of people, including the band of the Masterton Rifles, attended, expecting all along that the day might still turn out favorably. About three o'clock the rain ceased, but it was then too late to go on with the sports. A dance was, however organised in the evening, the music being: supplied by tbe band, and dancing was kept up until tho small hours. The spoils, which were originally announced for Monday, came off on Tuesday. The attendance was not so large as on former occasions, tut probably the unsettled state of the weather was the cause of this. The day was all that could bo desired until 1 o'clock, when a repetition of Monday's downpour spoiled the rest of the fun, and somo of the events did not come off,' The principal race of tho day was the Mauriceville Handicap, which was closely contested, the running of 0.
