The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1887 THE PUBLIC WOBRS STATEMENT.
The Public Works Statement will probably be accepted as a compromise.' It tapers off, certainly, but the tapering is of a very deliberate character. Fewer loaves and fishes are to be distributed, but though they be less in number, it is quite evident that they are still more than we can afford. The retrenchment already affirmed by the Ministry and the Parliament is something great in itself, but yet it is something small as contrasted with the money jiow proposed to be expended on unprofitable railway construction. The Ministry are distributing their favors with tolerable fairness all round, but there is a bias in certain directions, where political support must be cherished. The North Island trunk railway, for example, is treated with extreme tenderness instead of being ruthlessly condemned .as it huge job. Then again the Government appear more anxious to connect the Wellington and Manawatu railway—the line of a private company —with Woodville than their own railway passing through this district. Loan money is still to be speilt pretty freely: a little more than a million this year, a little less than a million next year, half a million in the following twelvemonths, and a quarter of a million in the succeeding term of 1890-91, That this money must be spent is to be regretted, more especially as a very large proportion of it is unlikely to bring in any return for many years to cpnie, and our annual bill for interest charges is likely to be increased year by year, We may also regret to see a tapering policy applied to road construction, We would sooner see more money spent on roads am} less on public buildings, Between now and 1891, it is proposed to expend £212,000 on public buildings-a sum which is certainly beyond our means. Public buildings, however, do not appear so extravagant as compared with harbor defences, The latter have already cost us £318,000, and probably we are not one whit safer than if this enormous treasure had not been .expended on batteries and other warlike torn fooleries, However, the less said about past mistakes the better. If Major Atkinson can see his way to reduce lo.an .expenditure gradually till it amounts to no more tfyan.a quarter of a million per annum, the country will right itself. To stop suddenly the expenditure of borrowed money would be injudicious • and impracticable. There is still a good deal of the old bad leaven in the Public Works Statement, and the task of cleaning our Augean railway stable ic beyond the strength of even Major Atkinson, The ysual monthly meeting of the Masterton Sichupl .coiiimitteo takes place at the Odd-fellows Hall, |?.erry street, tomorrow evenjng at 7.&U Constable Eccletpn proceeded to Wellington yrstei'day with som.e of the vomit of tho Mackay children fceljpyei} to have been poisoned at Groytown on Monday last, for the purpose of having it examined by the Government Analyst, Mr Beetham presented a petition on Monday from a number of residents in Masterton, praying the House to pass a prohibitory liquor law, as they are convinced thactlie only way to remedy the evils connected with the drink traffic is to prohibitthe manufacture and sale of intox- : icsjnts.
