THE NEW HEBRIDES.

Melbourne, December 8. A deputation of Representatives of the Presbyterian Church waited upon Lord Carnarvon to-day in connection with the New Hebrides question. The deputation declared that the French Government interfered with their converts and plantations, and asked his lordship to lay the case before the Imperial authorities, and to beg that the rights of British settlers be respected. Lord Carnarvon in replying, sympathised with the request of the deputation, but carefully abstained from expressing opinion on the subject. His Lordship, however, promised to comply with the desires of the deputation in bringing the matter under the notice of her Majesty's Government. London, December 8. Mr Service, replying to the speech of Lord Eosebery, referred m eulogistic terms to services of Lord Eosebery, Sir Henry Holland, and the Marquis of Salisbury in settling the New Hebrides difficulty, and expressed the hope that the settlement arrived at would be executed in the spirit as well as the letter of the agreement, as it was essential to the welfare of colonists to the landing of convicts in Australia. In conclusion, Mr Service declared that the union of the naval forces of the Mother Country and the colonies would create a spirit of federation better than anything else. WOOL SALES.
