TARATAHI CARTERTON ROAD BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday. Present—Messrs H. R, Bunny (chairman), W. Booth, H. Braithwaite, W. Parker, E. W. Dorset, J. Rayner, N. Grace. J. Stevens and D. Eeid. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the Treasurer reported a debit balance of £214 14 s 7(1 A return was read, showing that some metalling on the maiu road, under the supervision of the roadmen, had cost 25s per chair. Mr Rayner thought it had cost too much, and he was certain that the same work, if let by tender, would have been done at 20s per chain. After some discussion the subject was left in abeyance, as all the members were not present. A request from Mr 0. Christiansen for leave to cut the grass from the side of the road was granted. W. Corlett applied to be paid £1 lis 6d per chain instead of £l7s 6d, for work done on the Long Bush Road. The request was granted, providing the work was finished off to the satisfaction of the Warden. A letter was read from the Crown Lands Office re the alteration in value of some Crown and Native Lands. It was resolved that notice be given to Messrs W.B.Allen and Wajdento clean out the drains on their properties, to prevent the water from overflowing the road. Tenders for the formation and metalling of 02 chains of the Cemetery Road were' received as follows;—A, Olliver £2 2s Gd per chain, P. Carr £7B for the 82 chains, Gardiner & Co. £79, Daysh & Burgess £1 19s per chain (accepted,) W. Corlett £2l4s per chain, Cephas & Monaghan £77105. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Dorset, seconded by Mr Reid, that the resolution relating to the roadmen having the entire supervision of the main road be rescinded. The Overseer handed in a report showing the work necessary to be done on the main road at present, and stated the reason the metalling which had been spoken aboutjiad not been done was owing to the gravel requiring so much stripping at the pit, which occupied so much of the men's time. It was ; resolved tlut J. Knight the roadman be allowed the sum of 110 for the use of his horse and cart for road work. It was decided that Mr Stevens have the supervision of tlig main road, at the southern end of the Board's district, and Mr Rayner the northern end. Mr Reid was authorised to employ a man for a few days on the road leading to Mr George's property. Mr Braithwaite reported, as requested by the last meeting, that the bridge over the Ruamahunga River at Waihakeke would cost about £3O to make it fit fit for traffic, and if the bridge was made passable he offered to make an exchange of some land for a road which would be more convenient than the present one. After some discussion on the matter, it was. moved by Mr Booth, seconded by Mr Grace that this Board does not feel itself prepared to take over the responsibility of the said bridge. Several accounts were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated
