TOWN LANDS TRUST.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Masterton Town Lands Trustees was held last evening (Friday). Present: Messrs W. Lowes (in the chair) W. Perry, and T. Parsons. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the treasurer reported a credit balance of £9 6s 6o\ The following accounts were passed for payment: A. R. Bunny £lO ss, Lowes and lorns £2 9s 6d. A letter was read from Mr A. R. Bunny, solicitor, re overcharge in price of lease, stating that the extra length of the lease justified the extra charge, and expressing willingness to have the amount taxed. The consideration of the letter was held over till next meeting. Messrs Perry and the clerk were requested to inspect the Trust cottage adjoining the Salvation Army barracks with a view to carrying out necessary repairs. Mr Lowes gave notice that at the next meeting of the Trust he would move-That the reserve prices of part town acre No 2 at the corner of Chapel and Hall streets be revised, with a view of making them acceptable to tenants. Mr Lowes drew attention to Mr G. Beetham's letter re the Trust Management Bill, and said it justified his remarks at the public meeting in the Tlieatre Royal a few evenings ago, when he stated that the Trustees did not intend to rush the Bill through this session. He said there was every prospect of the Bill being passed next session with very slight alterations. Referring to the application from the Borough Council for a grant towards the steam Fire Engine, Mr Lowes said he was opposed to the application. The people had decided at a public meeting not to purchase it, and he did not think that the Trust should encourage the engine being forced upon the Borough by subscribing towards it. He opposed it as a matter of principle, and considered that the lands belonged to the people, and should be used for the purposes for which they were intended, His views might perhaps be modified after hearing the arguments of the other side, but at present he was of opinion that the centre of the town was mostly benefitted by it, and should pay for its support, although he admitted that by the public utility clause of the Act the funds might be used for such a purpose,. Mr Perry alluded, to the amount of property the Trust had in the Town, some of which was comparatively uninsured. He failed to see that the people had voted against the purchase of the Jubilee, and considered that the Trust were as much justified in voting money for the engine, as for the public park. Mr Lowes replied that the Park was the property of the people, and was used by them, whereas the steam fire engine benefitted one portion of the town only, The meeting then adjourned.
