THE MAYORAL ELECTION.

For the first time since 1881, when Mr A. Bish defeated Mr M. Caselberg, a contested election was held for the Masterton Mayoralty yesterday. Although public meetings were held and Town Lands Trust., and Borough questions became mixed up in the affray, very little interest appeared to be taken in the contest during the day, Up till about four o'clock there was scarcely any indication of an election in the town, but after that time things began to liven up and a spasmodic effort was made to infuse something like "go" in the proceedings by bringing out several buggies aud traps to bring up the dilatory About one hundred persons assembledto hear the declaration, which was made at 0,30 p.m.by MrE, Brown, the returning officer,as follows:—A. W. Eenall 141, W. Lowes 96, informal 4. The result was received with cheers, and Mr Eenall, the successful candidate, mounted the steps and returned thanks lor the honor conferred upon him. He said it was the first battle the people of Masterton had won since they had asserted their rights, and hoped it would be an example to them, and exhorted them to always stand up and assert their rights if ever an attempt was made to trample upon them, He expressed a hope that the business of the Council would be carried on satisfactorily, and felt sure the whole of the Councillors would be as delighted as himself at the result of the election. [Laughter.]

Mr W. Lowes thanked those electors who had recorded their votes in his favor, and said he had been relieved of a great responsibility by his defeat. He promised every assistance in his power to the Mayor elect, and trusted that the affairs of the Borough would be placed on a satisfactory footing.. A vote of thank to the returning officer concluded the proceedings, whiclnyero.of&vei'yquiejnakfq, .
