The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1887. A BLUE SHIRT MINISTRY.

The Lyttelton Times calls the new

Cabinet" The Blue Shirt Ministry," and the niok name is not inapt. The Major has on this occasion picked his team from the democratic section of his party and at heart he is a radical himself. If he has led in the past a Conservative following he has done so against the grain. In 1884 Major Atkinson declared that the policy of his Government had been "to see whether a better title could not be found than the ordinary freehold title," Only a radical could have made an assertion of this kind and since it was made we have labelled the Major " dangerous." During the past three year Sir Julius Vogel has been the square Conservative peg in the round Radical hole and now the Major who fears but one foe, ut Sir Julius," has jumped himself into the round Radical hole. Sir Julius, no doubt, thanks the Major for this tactical move. Is not Sir Julius sick and weary of the Badioal. hole, and is it not kind of Major Atkinson to dislodge him from it. Sir Julius is now free to appear before the public in his natural colors! He will retain his own Canterbury following and he will probably absorb a good deal of the Conservative material that Major . Atkinson has thrown overboard. The Major by becoming an avowed Radical has no doubt intended to smother Sir Julius ; instead of this he has strengthened his hands, and in a fortnight's.time, when the tng of war domes, if we mistake not, Sir Julius will be found heading a very powerful Opposition. Still we;-hope Major Atkinson and his new. Ministry will survive the session. They, are pledged to retrenchment and'if they are -in earnest in carrying out this important task, we trust nothing will be allowed to hinder them from accomplishing it. We are indifferent as to whether the work of retrenchment is carried out by a Conservative or a Radical Ministry, All that we desire is to see it carried out, Differing as we do with Major Atkinson; we shall yet be prepared to support him as long as we find him working in the oause of retrenchment, jhe Major has<no 'constructive statesmanship, and we do not expect from him any statesmanlike measures, hut he is capable, if he ohooses, of carrying out a policy of retrenchment, and for this reason, he may, even with his present undesirable colleagues, do.good service to; the Colony." If the Blue Shirt Ministry retrenches fill honor to the Blue Shirts.

We learn by a telegram from our Cartorton correspondent that Arthur Moore, a pupil toaoher In the Oartertan school, shot himself this morning, By the facts' gleaned since in reference to the case by •our correspondent in conversation with Mrßethune, the second teacher of the school, it appears that ho weiif to the school about the usual time.- for ringing the bell, and on going into the clcias room found the young man dead with the gun by his -side. The Post Bays that the present Ministry is the most thoroughly Atkinsonian one which the country has ever known, This is very singular result to have beon evolved from the general foeling of distrust which was expressed towards Major Atkinson by most of the members when before the electors.
