The following letter was : vead from tho Mastertou Town Clerk P'Tbave the honor by direction of the Masterton Borough Council, to apply toJbe Trustees for a yearly grant to. meet the annual, payments on the Steam Fire Engine, recently imported. In support of the application,! am to point out that the Trust ia possessed of valuable blocks of buildings in the centre of the town, which if unfortunately burned, would (in some caseß) probably not be erected! also that the Council have a heavy burden in this case to' support -a Municipal brigade, and provide the requisite means to extinguish fires and protect the property of the townspeople. The funds of the Ceuncil being inadequate, and there being a probability of special rates on the gas loan account, the Council wish to avoid any increase of theneueralr'ateto meet the charges for the steam Fire Engine, and they feel sure that the burgesses who aro also your constituents, would approve of an annual vote from your funds to save them from additional taxation. The object Ib. undoubtedly one of public utility, and as such is within the scope of your Trust, and one that Bhould receive from you generous consideration,"
Mr Hare, in moving that the application be referred to. the Works Committee to. report at tho next meeting, said that the subject required serious consideration. The Trust would have to bflvery careful in making promises of annual amounts, otherwise they might find that they had.not enough money, to meet .their engagements. They had.only .£50.. put at interest, 'and ,£2O to their credit, and ihoy bad thoMaslerton and Fernridgo Schools, and the Park Trust subsidies to meet, He thought tho Finance ; Committee should go carefully through the Trust lifiUirß and see in what'position they really wero before taking any action in the matter. Mv E. Chaujberlaiu seconded the resolution..
Mr Perry said he. was in favor of making an annual grant to the steam fire engine, and take something off the school grants. He thought the schools had done very well out of the Trust, and his opinion was, ibat less should be given to them
' The Chairmau said that no doubt the feeling of the Trust would be in favor of assisting tho Steam Fire Engine. At the same time it was necessary to examiuo the funds ol the Trust, The motion was then carried, THE NEW ACT.
The proposed now Act for consolidation the several acts relating to tho Trust, was read, disoussed, and amended, and tho Clerk was authorized to seo that the necessary advertising was done in connection with it, An acoount was referred back to the Trust solicitor for an explanation re alleged overcharge tor drawing up a leasn.
