A TESTIMONIAL.

[To the Editor.]

Sir.—l was up at Mr Hogg's meeting on Wednesday evening last, and of all the disgusting trash a man could echo, I never heard his living .'equal, I could not stop to hear the whole of Mr H.'s eloquence, it was really too sincere, Now Mr Editor I will ask you ono question, as between man and man, what has Mr H. done for {the town. In the first place he has condemned the school site. Take him on the other hand as a journalist I admire him simply for the reason that there is no man that can write a more slating article than Mr Hogg; Take again, Mr Beetham, I can travel his recollection back to as far as I oan trace it (25 years ago). I would ask you to track Mr Hogg's course m his address last night at the Hall, He used to go a lot for the working man. Now I will ask you straight if you compare the two men in the balance you will find one wanting. Another thing I would refer to i 9 a remark made by Mr H. that ho was a Mend to the working, man. But let Mr H. get in; it will be the worst day Maaterton over saw, after hearing his address. Ho mentioned that he was a great friend to the working man, but.l will recall to Mr H.'s memory that it was Hot long ago, because the County j Council refused to advertise in his J paper, he hounded their Chairman down, Mr McGregor, a man whom everyone respeots. Ho (Mr H.) took the trouble to : write -a leading article on him, he dragged him through his columns of filth to tho best of his ability and MrH, regularly lost casto, the same as he will : at the 1 ! general election. P.S.—lf Mr Hogg wants any more information he can either come to me (that is if hewantshimself told off) or I will refer him to the Editor of the Standard, a man I don't think he will taokle, lam sorry Mr Editor to trouble you with all this trash, if you find room in your paper put it in, if not lam &c, ' F. W. Chapman. July 28,1887.
