President: Hughll.Beetlmm; Vice President; T. ■■ Parsons; Committee: R. Bright, T. Dixon, A. Elkins, L. J. Hooper, W. G. King, If. Billington, D. S. Papworfch, F. D. Pelling, M. Wilton; Hon. Secretary and TriEAsuiiEit: W. . Mclenaio; Judges: Poultry—A. A. .White and J, L>, Oakly; Pigeons —Burton Boys; Canaries—A. A. White, - The third annual show of the above Society opened yesterday in the Drill Shed, and both in number and qual-
ity of the'exliibifcs was a great success. The pens used ou this occasion were obtained from the Wellington Society, and being of a uniform .size and appearance added to the attractiveness of the. room, and placed the judges above suspicion, which is generally the idea competitors, entertain when each exhibitor has pens 01 a certain class, and the judges are at all familiar with them. The staging yesterday was carried out without the. usual bustle and confusion, as every: compartment was duly numbered, and all the exhibitors had to do was to puttheir birds in .the space alloted to ; them. The judging was over in good time, and gave:.general satisfaction, but as is usual in competitions of the kind, some ot> the defeated ones were somewhat, sore at seeing their pots in ' the background. The attendance during the afternoon and evening was_not so numerous as last year, which was doubtless owing, to the unfavorable weather. Mr Pearson's private band played several selections during.the evening, to the enjoyment of the promenaders. Pressure on our space will not admit of an extended criticism of the exhibits. In the Dorking- classes the entries were hmitetWbufc the birds were a fail" lot, the colored class being especially good. Hamburgs were keenly contested, the silver spangled having eight capital specimens, the first and second prize takers being well laced, but badly shown. The golden pencilled first were a nicely marked pair. Andalusians brought,. out,a" field of eight, The first prizo takers were not a well matched pair, the cock being too dark for the hen. Houdans, over and under twelve months, was a gift to Mr F. Pelling, who showed four pens of excellently plumed birds, sonje of them, however, being a trifle dark. _ Langshans were .a' feature in the show, this being, the best represented class. Unfortunately most ■ of thertv were wry-t,ailed, and there was also 100 mucli purple sheen, which in close..judging would -prove a 'disqualification. .There were, .indications of .breeding "in,', among this-.' class.-..'ln Black Red Game there were.some remarkably good specimens of the modern-type of game fowl, although there was a difference of opinion as to the qualifications of tho .first and second prize takers. Buff Cochin and Dark Brahma?, did not excite ..fcfeen ; comp.etition, but.in. light Brahmas the®-: \veiie .some splendid exhibits', Mossra Rogen and Co.'s first prize takers being a magnificent pair. Both White and Brown Leghorns brought out numerous competitors, Mr Curtis carrying off the honors in the former class and Mr McKenzie 111 the latter, The first prize takers- in the brown class; -though a remarkably good pair, were slightly faulty, the hen was defective iu breadth across the back, caused. through breeding with . too close a strain. The:-judges found a difficulty in coming/to a decision in this color, as the specimens were of a first class order,. Plymouth Socks were also well represented, and created great interest among poultry fanciers, as this breed appears to be gaining favor for its general all-round qualities, Bantams wero well shown, there being some rare and excellent exhibits, and in the open purebred class the entries showed four rare specimens, the first prize. birds being a pair- of White. Plymouth Hocks. A Spanish- Da-rl? Brahma cross gained first honors for laying purposes, and a Buff Cochin —Andalusiau cross for table purposes, A Brown Leghorn carried off the palm for the single cock class,
and a Wyandotte hen was closely rim by a brown Leghorn for first place among the sixteen competitors in the single lien class. The selling class produced sixteen entries, ■ White and Brown Leghorns being' to the fore among the pmetakers. Some excellent specimens of ducks and.,geese
were shown, and in the pigeon class there were=so.me very, well-bred birds exhibited the Barbs being remarkably good, and the Magpies and Doves well' plumed. The canaries were a good all-round collection, and made a very pretty show, There were two
fair specimens of the cockatoo shown, both boing in excellent feather. The Society may be fairly congratulated on the success 'of the Show, for although they have not received so many entries as in previous years, they have undoubtedly brought together a class pf birds it would be difficult to beat in : the Colony. The .special prize - takers were
