The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, JULY 27, 1887.

On Monday, our local contemporary attacked Mr Horace Baker, a candidate for the, Woodville seat imputing to his candidature, unworthy motives. If foul motives are attributable to a truthful and honorable gentleman like Mr Horace Baker, what kind of motives actuate Mr A. W. Hogg another Parliamentary candidate whose personal character certainly, does not stand on a higher level. We thought Mr Hogg intended to fight the election with olean hands, at any rate lie assured his readers to that effect a few days ago. If Mr Hogg the candi-. date is really fighting with clean hands, Mr Hogg the journalist undoubtedly revels in filth. . . Our local contemporary devoted another column yesterday to distorting the plain facts of the Masterton second school question. We may remind' him that Messrs Boddington, Lowes, and Payton do not stand alone in condemning his.treacherous conduct, but that Messrs McEwoii and (Men, two very honest and trustworthy rosidonts, who, as members of the local commit tee, thoroughly understand the points at issue, are dead against him. Will Mr Hogg take the public into his confidence and say what passed betweenhimsolfand Mr A. W.Brown, a certain member of the Education Board, prior to the May meeting of that body, when the said'Mr Brown asked the Board tp suspend action in dealing with the school? ■

The wonted gravity of the Council Chambers, was disturbed last evening during thetimethegas committee's report was being considered. One councillor desired to know what reasons were given for the decrease of the output "Higli price of gas" replied a dignitary who has a hobby for lowering the price. "It's not Jubilee month," retorted a facetious member. " Increase burning," suggested a country councillor. "Perhapsits owing to the new moon" queried a Queen Street occupant of the Morocco "Question,'' "Question, your worship," said a North wardsman and question,it was I
