A large company went out by a special train on Saturday 'to witness, the formal opening of the Wingatui Yiaduct, on the Otago Central Line. Tho bridge is the largest of its kind in the colony. It is 690 f- in length, and 150 ft above tho bed of the creek. It consists of eight spans,-'three of 106 ft,,and five of 66ft. Tlio total cost of the structure was £22,000. A notable feature of the bridgo was that the wliolo of the ironwork, comprising 574 .tons, was manufactured by a local firm,Meßsre Sparrow &'Co. The bridge having been, thoroughly tested, was declared opon by Sir: R, Stout, and then-. followed a little speechifying! .which was very short, owing to. tho bitterly cold weather and bleak; spot 1 on which it took place. . _ OaEYMociH, June 26. W ELLINGTON, June 28. Archbishop Redwood and Father: Cassidy -visited Parihaka yesterday and we're enthusiastically welcomed by Te Whiti. A mounted party escorted the reverend gentlemen into the village. Lahman's Excejsior Wine Vaults had a narrow escape from destruction this morning. .A fire was discovered at 6,20, by a workman passing along the street. It was oxtiriguised without much difficulty. From the appearances of the inside of the building, it was, ,no doubt, the work of an incendiary, as a pile of wood was discovered alongside tho position where the fire originated, but 110 'clue of the perpetrator was discovered. The stock was insured for & 150 in the Phoenix Office. An inquiry will he held. -
Bulls, June 28. Messrs Bruce, Arkwright, and Berniugton are out for Bangitikei, and Mr Stevens is a probable candidate. Dunedw, June 27. The Hon. the Premier addressed his constituents, the electors of Duhedin. East, at Old Knox Church this evening. The building was crowded, there being some 700 persons present. At the conclusion of his address the Premier was questioned at some length, and the proceedings became somewhat lively. Sir Bobert said that his title was offered to him unsolicited and. unexpected, .and lie would have refused, it did he not think that .it . would have looked something like" snobbery on his part not. to have accepted it. (Applause, and cries of Oh!) He would abolish the Upper House if he had the power. A voto of thanks and confidence was carried, the meeting dispersing after giving cheers for Sir iiobert, and also for his opponent, Mr James Allen.
