Gardening Notes.
Pemß and Sycopods are exceedingly graceful plants, and "will, only luxuriate when kept 111 sliady places and in a damp atmosphore, An excellent fernery can be made at a very low cost by erecting, a jean to houße, j boarded :upf all round, and the roof covered in-with strong calico; which basbeen previously dressed with boiled linseed oil, to which has been added a little resin and sugar
of lead to cause it "to dry. Sack ft honso need not be in any way costly, yet in it—grouped upon rock work and' old roots which have! been brought in and built up into designs representing the banks of creeks or natural grottoes —we can grow the most lovely fern? now known, to cultivation. Among the most striking are' the' variegated kind. All floricultural frpids visitiog oilf Inst show must the beno* tiful sppcifflensorpteris. Pteris.Cretica, ulhfta'lineata, the iormet exhibited' by Mr Mark Wilton and the ; latter by Mrs W; H. 'Beetham, Not should, tliwfl;.b'e the only repreaenta* tives.of jvariegated' ferns. There are others as-beautiful; if not mora so, which .should not-be left out of the smallest, edllectiou, ' Amongst may be found, Pteris' nemoialis Ptoris sirrulata cristate var, Lastreu aristata var (which only a year or so ago was imported from Japan.) Its. constitution is good,' ami its variegar tiou is yellow on 11 dark, sliiuing greeii ground. Nephrodium albb punctatum is a plant of leathery' texture, dark ia color, and copiously dotted with white. Gymuogrummii Muollcri, very rare | similar to the'last! motioned, but the dots are in the shape of brilliant silvery scales, producing a pleSsing and effective variegation, entirely .distinct from that of any other. One of the handsow est is the Japanese Athyriuia I Goringianum tricolor; it ( hasgraceful : fronds, from 10 to 15 inches in length, and ; they. are'remarka lite for their pretty claret-colored raclils, provided on each aide,, with pintle, variegated with white, and luriiisheil throughout with a centrol whitish, band, which, m the fronds get perfectly matured, be. comes of a greyish hue, very distiuct from the dark green ground wj&h surrounds it. This is ono'of thetit, and only beaten,, in my opinion, by Pteris tricolor, wbioh latter jam only be grown in stove teniperutufo, Our edvico for the months work is: get along as fast us you can with your planting, doing it thoroughly; it will not suffice to slick your spado into the, ground, shovo your tree in behind it, and them stamp down with' the foot, Oh no ! If you plant this fashion there will be llio usual, .complaint characteristic of the lazy and, carelces plauter—Mr So-and-so, nil those piuaßj all those macrocarpas! I bought from you are dead.—This is not.'just. If you will persist in planting your trees in such haphazard fashion, sit do*n quiet with the just deaerts; of your idleness, and not blame tho man who sold you the tries; nor .try to do him au injury by circ ilat ug lying as to tho quality of trees he supplied you with.. Purchase your trees froii) men of proved merit and plant thet* according to his instruoiioiiß. t| Jf Kitcbsn Gabdkk.

Do not leave the ground till it ii wanted for cropping. FLOWER GARDEN. Gladiolus, Sparaxis, Ixia, Babiania, Wateonia, Spanish Irt, Pavoni*, and a host of other bulbs, should now/ to soWn. ; To bring them to show po'rfeo tion, enrich the ground by manuring. Though it is always, bust'for them, to be planted early, they may bo kept, out of the ground until July or August provided due attention is paid to'them afterwards, By thus planting later in the season, tho flowering period tnay.ba prolonged. Gladioli especially arte adapted for late planting. No Spring flowering bulbs must be out of thA. ground now, Plant, trim, and hedges. It may not be out of place here to mention a few of tho best trees and shruba for gardens and pleasure grounds.
