At a meeting of tho members of tli Wairarapa Jockey Club held on Thursday afternoon at the White Hart Hotel, Cartorton, tho financial aspects of the Club were fully discussed, and some of the members came forward, and having guaranteed the amount sufficient to pay outstanding debts have placed things on a Sevunil notices of motion were given for disoußßion at the next meeting of moinbers. An action of an unusual character, in which some extraordinary exposures were made, washeard before Judge Wilkinaoii, at the Sydney Metropolitan District Court. A colored person, calling himself tho " Rev S.C. Anderson," sued the Rev Andrew .Gardiner, Modorator of the Presbyterian Assembly, for£2oo, damages for a libel contained in a letter published by Mr Gardiner, in which he cautioned tho public against the coloured gentleman, who had been ovoking sympathy and support by piteous tales of distress, and doclared him to be an impostor, who had improperly assumed tho title of "Rev." The Judge held that the letter complained of was undoubtedly libellous, but that the defence of justification was complete. Tho defence of justification, however, had not been pleaded, and he was bound, therefore, to give a verdict for plainlilf, but it would be for a farthing damages, without costs.
Between forty and fifty couplesattended the soiree in the Theatro Royal last evening in aid of the funds of St. Matthews Sunday School' Building fund. The rain which had kept off all day commenced to deceud about 7,30 p.m., and this doubtless prevented a' lara;e number from tending. Dancing was carried on with great vigor till about 2.30 ii.m, tu the music of piano, cornet and violin. The refreshments supplied wore excellent both as regards quality and quantity, and tho whole arrangements woro most satisfactory. Tho gallery was we'll filled with spectators, and notwithstanding tho unfavorable weather, thero will be a balance to the credit of the object of tho gathering.
