Mr "Buttle as tc ■whether the Government would have the power to commit the colony to an expense of £IOOO a year for ten yours, ■Mr Beetham said the vote would have to be taken annually. If it was passed this year, he tlTdughij-Slfe Go- . vernments that followed would almost feel duty bound to sanction the amount annually till :the ten years had expired. He regretted he had not brought farther particulars to iay before thow present. He might :iaonHon.that: the results in the colony so far in. connection with donations towards the Imperial Institute liad nqt bc'on -verj satisfactory; At home they, expected the Colony would contribute £15,000, but he was afraid that anibiujt wouli not be forthcoming. The Chairman stated that the Borough Council.had received copious documents.from the 'Government and Sir Julius Yogel'on ;tho subject of the Imperial Institute, but so' far no vorj great enthusiasm- had been displayed He did not think it was from want oi loyalty but of funds. Owing to the long drought, low price of stock, and depressipn,; of were nnable to afford to contribute. ■ He had brought' the matter before the but they , : had evinced nd desire tp. take' anj active part in iti They might be able tc initiate something .small that would be a lasting momento of tho event, Ho was in favor of : raising a. sum oi money and erecting' a? home' for the aged and needy. £BOO, he thought, would be sufficient to carry out a suggestion of that kind. Mr Mackay would like to know ii the colony, after subscribing £IOOO a year had ahythmg Id do with the management of the Imperial Institute.
Mr Beetham said he believed a representative could bo chosen either, by the Government or subscribers,' It was intended that every contributing body should bo fairly represented. ■ After a short;discussion, in which; McHst's K. Brown-and G. B. W. 'Dal-: rymple took part, it was deoided to call a public meeting for Monday next. His Worship the Mayor explained that his reason for not calling a public mooting, was because he. thought itwas not merely a matter that; interested tho Borough but tho whole of the North Wairarapa; and thought that a meeting called by Mr Beetham Would meet with greater success,' , Tho mooting then adjourned' after passing a vote of thanks to tlie Chairman. • ■*•
