The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 1887. A DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE.

Mji'B. S. Hiwzcfs introduces himself aa a democrat to the electors of Wairarapa North by an inset circulated with onr present issue. It is not usual for candidates for legislative honors to proclaim: themselves . democrats, but' virtually they may all be classified as eueh. The democracy of the colony, determine every eleotion, and no candidate has a ghost of a ehance who does not count on its support. Democracy as an ideal is an almost perfect form of Government, but %ve fear that the colonial democrat is rarely faithful to tho principles whicli are essential to a pure type of . democracy. Take Sir Robert Stout for example. Was he not our pattern democrat, but when an imperial honor came in his way h© at onco succumbed to the bait. A democrat is % democrat till temptation comes in his way, and then he kicks the ladder away which has enabled him to Moend to a more lofty olovation. The democraoy which hua m far been developed in New J3e&* land haa been alloyed with baser wisture, but some day m hope to flea ft truer form of it established. Turning to the general principles advocated by Mr Hawkins in Itia manifesto, wa can give them an almost all round endorsement, The unjustifiable exlcn"ion of our publio works policy, and a corresponding extension of tariff are evils which are graphically portrayed by him. We approve, too, of what we understand to be hit sentiments in favor of simplifying our local self government machinery, and of allocating Crown lands where suitable for small farms in small sections, and where only fit for :p&etoral purposes, in larger areas. We are also glad to see him plainly denouncing the Ministry for their ill-advised interference with landed interests. Of course, Mr R, S. Hawkins candidature will open up .other' political issues ajjart from t£fc attract' principles which fee professes. ■ It may, fop instance, bo possible for him to assist by his candidature to retimi a member for Waimrapa North who will be diametrically opposed to the views which bfe Bo earnestly advocates. It is, however, prematura yet to forecasto this aspect of the election. Presumably wo have "already three candidates in the field, but possibly a fourth or fifth may yet prevent a triangular sonnet, which . might rea»H t througfc » »piittin/T Bp of wfae, in fovor.of » minority rather than of a majority of flip electors. As far as we we cowmrwd, w» bono to see.
