THE WELLINGTON AND MANAWATU RAILWAY CO.'S LAND SALE.

The attendance at Meslrt'T. K. Macdonald and Co"s auction rooms on Friday afternoon was very large, the spacioifs saleroom being filled by upwards of 600.pcrsons t tho majority of whom appeared to be; of the yeoman class, who were more than likely to become bona tide settlers. Upwards of iIOO persons came from the North, and tho visitors from Christchurch. Otago, Nelson, and other parts was proportionally large. .'Jjhe directors of tho company and (he auctioneers, and indeed the inhabitants of the province generally, arc to be congratulated upon'the success whioh attended yesterday's .auction sale, Every section submitted was Quitted, and only 11 allotments in the township of Manukau were passed m. The bidding was spirited and competition was keen throughout the sale. The auctioneer opened tho proceedings by reading the conditions of sale and making a few preparatory remarks. Ho said that tho company's engineer had ascertained by a series oi experiments that their locomotives could bo run with 'firewood in the place of coal, and that It cords of firewood would produce as much steam as a ton of coal. The directors had therefore decided to purchase for cash, firewood along the line from settlers who had purchased sections from the company and who were willing to sell their wood at reasonable prices, and it was probable that the company would take from £ISOO to £2OOO worth of wood pet annum from the settlers. The sale then proceeded. The following is a complete schedule of the land sold, together with the names of tho buyers and the purchase money, Agiucultdiul Laxds, Makokab
