HERBERTVILLE.

(From our own Correspondent.)

The Salvation Army, represented by Mr and Mrs Macara, of Waipawa, have commenced a crusade in our township, but as yet they have met with little success as regards converts. The first Sunday evening three penitents went up to the stool of repentance, but were evidently suffering from the " spirituous" and not "spiritual" excitement, However, the meetings are numerously attended by all classes,.and are conducted in a manner that compares favorably with the accounts of the army meetinge in many places, and this I attribute to the fact that.we are very much neglected by other religious demoninations,

The additions to the Hotel are rapidly 'approaching completion, and will be a great improvement to the township. • Mr-John. Riddell, of. the firm of Riddell and Warren, contractors, ■ met with a nasty accident last week. He received a kick from a horse, just below the knee cap. Luckily no bones were. broken, but Mr Riddell will have to lay up for a few weeks. Great sympathy is felt by all the district. Winter lias evidently commenced early, as for the last few days we have had very heavy rains, and it is bitterly cold. This should warn us to make some preparations for witer evening amusements, Hitherto we have been very merry with concerts and dances, but now, ftlan, all seems dead, just at the very time 'we ought to be alive. One good thing is, our Library has opened, and that is a great boon, but. still I consider that weekly readings or something of the kind is wanting.
